Our one year old cat needs major surgery

In September 2021, The Burk Family adopted two cats, Houston (formerly named LoverBoy) and Cleveland.

About a month ago, we noticed Cleveland was limping. Seeing it was not getting better, we took him to our vet, who performed x-rays and found nothing unusual. Pain medicine was provided, and it was noted that if it were a muscle or ligament issue, it would resolve over time. It has only gotten worse.

We obtained a referral to a specialist who reviewed the previously taken x-rays and identified two fractured femurs at the level of the hip joint. The fracture cannot be repaired. The specialist noted that growth plate fractures occur more commonly in male cats that were castrated too early (before age 1.)

If Cleveland were older, we would make difficult decisions. But he is only one, and we feel it is our responsibility as adopting pet owners to give him a chance.

The specialist, a surgeon, would like to perform a femoral head ostectomy (FHO) surgery. It is considered a "salvage" procedure for treating various hip joint diseases/injuries. After an FHO, the gluteal muscle group becomes responsible for transferring the weight-bearing forces of the limb to the pelvis. This is often referred to as a "false joint." While effective at relieving discomfort, an FHO is not meant to recreate the mechanics of a normal coxofemoral joint.

The estimate for the surgery is $3,500 to $4,275 for the left side first. Cleveland must recover before we return for the right side (which will cost around the same.) At this time, we are requesting donations for the surgery on the left side.

We are moving forward with surgery to help Cleveland immediately. Unfortunately, we need to use our credit card. Your donation will help us to pay down this expense.
