Help those affected by the Climate Catastrophe in Brazil

Donation protected
Hi everyone,

My name is Julia Carolina. I was born in Brazil, more specifically in the state of Rio Grande do Sul - where this Climate Catastrophe is happening right now. I have been living in the UK for over 8 years and I just had to do whatever I could at this stage to help.

I have family and friends there, living in the affected regions and other regions under high alert. But my appeal is not simply for them:
  • It's about an entire state with a population of over 10million people who are suffering something I am not able to describe in words.
  • It's about over 85 people that lost their lives *so far* (as of 07th May). This is the official numbers by the civil defense. However, what we hear from volunteers at the forefront supporting the rescue efforts is that there lots of bodies of people and animals just floating around.
  • It's about a state that has struggled with heavy floods 4x in under a year, with this one being the worst one ever in its history.
  • It's about a state with over 300 municipalities under water, representing around 70% of the state being affected.
  • It's about over 100,000 climate refugees who had to leave everything behind so they could live, but lost absolutely everything they worked for their entire lives.
  • It's about over 100 people still missing.
  • It's about thousands of people that need to be rescued with nowhere to go, apart from desperately waiting on the rooftops of the remaining of their houses for help.
  • It's about an entire state being completely stranded, struggling to get access to food, water, medication because many roads and bridges simply collapsed. Even though things are being delivered by air, it's still not enough for what they need.
  • It's about entire cities and livelihoods completely destroyed.

I could go on and on.

I understand that there lots of calamities in the world right now and not one is more important than the other. Even though I am not there physically, my heart and my mind is there and I just felt that I needed to try something else this time.

There are many people, organisations (governmental and non-governmental) trying to raise funds to support the state of Rio Grande do Sul. The challenge is to make sure your donation is going to those that are actually able to make a difference NOW.

I have been following some organised efforts from people and organisations I trust and they are the ones I am going to transfer everything raised via this GoFundMe campaign. Please note that I linked their pages and profiles on the underlined text. Those are:

Luz Alliance Fund : Created in 2020 by Gisele Bündchen in partnership with BrazilFoundation, the Luz Alliance Fund initially supported families affected by the COVID-19 pandemic in Brazil. As of 2021, it also started supporting environmental protection and regeneration projects. At this time, it is collaborating with the thousands of families affected by the rains in Rio Grande do Sul.

Polly Oliveira : Polly is a Brazilian Digital Creator who is well known for her work supporting those that need the most in the worst areas of the country. I follow her for a very long time and I have been so impressed by her efforts. Even though she is from a different state, she has been tirelessly supporting people who are volunteering to help in the rescue efforts. She has my full trust as she has been documenting where the money is going, how they are helping and what exactly they need at every second of the day. I would love to destine a parcel of this GoFundMe to her institute.

Felipe Neto : Felipe Neto is a massive Brazilian influencer who has been working tirelessly as well. He found a fantastic solution to one of the biggest problems Rio Grande do Sul is facing right now - access to clean water. The solution, as he explains in one Instagram post, is to buy the water purifiers from PWTech which can transform the worst kind of water in drinkable water 100% safe for human consumption. However, there are only slightly over 200 of these available in the whole country at the moment and we would need to purchase all of them! Felipe has managed to talk to the First Lady and she mobilised the Brazilian Airforce to transport these purifiers to Rio Grande do Sul once they have been bought. Each purifier costs on average R$ 22,000 reais and, therefore, Felipe needs to raise about R$ 4.8 million reais to buy them all. Since the start of his fundraising he has managed to raise R$ 1 million reais (in just 2 hours, which is amazing). My intention is to help them reach the R$ 4.8 million as quick as possible, because the airforce can't commit to go there more than once. They need to raise all the money, buy them to shift them all at once.

I've been an expat for over 10 years now. I've lived and traveled to different countries and continents. If there is something I've learnt is that despite the cultural and language differences, we are more alike than we are different, especially when it comes to love, pain and death.

Any help will be tremendously appreciated!
I will commit to document everything, especially on my LinkedIn page, the social media I use the most.
