Climb Kili With AWMB

Hi, we are Climb Kili With AWMB. We are a South Asian women's group planning to climb Mount Kilimanjaro on a history-making trip.
Asian Women MEAN Business (AWMB) is a UK-based education and empowerment platform for South Asian Women. We have taken on one of the greatest challenges to bring this iconic expedition of a group of South Asian women trekking Mount Kilimanjaro to fruition.
In August 2022, we flew out to Tanzania. All the women are British, from a South Asian heritage. This is the first time such an endeavour has been undertaken by an exclusively South Asian female group.
Getting to the summit of Kilimanjaro, the world’s tallest freestanding mountain, is not for the faint-hearted. Its permanently snow-capped summit towers 5,895 metres above sea-level-four times higher than Ben Nevis, UK’s highest mountain.
There are many reasons for assembling an exclusively South Asian female group to climb the world’s largest freestanding mountain and share our stories. Our main motivation for organising the trip is unmistakable: We want to show the world what Asian women are capable of. The Kilimanjaro expedition provides an example of what is possible for others.
A seed was planted that we should look at having a documentary crew join us and capture this momentous occasion. We are delighted that Award-winning documentary maker Rehmat Ryatt, who won several awards for Toxification, is on board with the project with her crew.
The documentary & travel costs for the videographers will cost approx £80,000. This breakdown is:
- £12,800 for film crew travel & flights
- £3,122 for filming permits and fixer fees
- £13,600 for filming and on-site wrangling
- £1500 for equipment hire and insurance
- £500 drone footage
- £20,600 editing (thousands of hours of footage are going to take weeks to edit!)
- £10,000 Post production costs sound engineering, colour mixing etc
- £5000 distribution
= £67,122 plus 20% contigency on production over run of £13,424 and addtional contingency on project costs.
These are budgeted costs, the actual costs will not go above this, and we are seeking sponsorship, grants and additional sources of commercial and social funding to finance this project.
We want to create a world-class documentary that will be screened at film festivals, cinemas and on a mainstream provider such as Netflix / Amazon Prime etc. We are constantly monitoring our budget and spending and will update as appropriate. In the unlikely event of any additional funds, these will be donated to a charity - Shirkisha being the social enterprise we are supporting in Tanzania being one.
Each of the ladies has funded their trip individually; this fundraiser is purely for the film crew to join us and the documentary to be produced and edited.
Climbing one of the seven summits is no small feat, especially when you're on track to make history. As these women embark on a brave, bold, and courageous journey that will leave the door wide open for those following, it is a journey YOU can be a significant part of.
We want to leave a lasting testament on the boundaries that can be broken for our daughters and your children too.
