CLIMBING KILIMANJARO IN MEMORY OF ROB MATTHEWS AND HELPING HOMELESS AND ABUSED ANIMALS ON ST MAARTEN
ON 10TH SEPTEMBER MYSELF AND 2 OF MY BROTHERS FORMER GUIDE-RUNNERS ALONG WITH A FAMILY FRIEND WILL SET OUT TO CLIMB KILIMANJARO IN MEMORY OF ROB.ROBERT MATTHEWS WAS A BLIND PARALYMPIC RUNNER WHO ACHIEVED THE STATUS OF THE FASTEST BLIND PERSON IN THE WORLD. HE OBTAINED NUMEROUS PARALYMPIC MEDALS THROUGHOUT HIS SPORTING CAREER, GAINED SEVERAL WORLD RECORDS THAT ARE STILL HOLDING, RECEIVED AN MBE FOR HIS ACHIEVEMENTS IN SPORTS (THE FIRST PARALYMPIC TO RECEIVE THIS AWARD), INDUCTED INTO THE BRITISH HALL OF FAME AND TOPPED IT OFF BY PUBLISHING HIS AUTOBIOGRAPHY.
ROB DIDN'T LET HIS BLINDNESS STOP HIM FROM DOING ANYTHING, FROM WATER SKI-ING, SNOW SKI-ING, SAILING A 60FT CATAMARAN, DRIVING A 70 SEATER POWER BOAT, FLYING A HELICOPTER AND DRIVING A RACE CAR AROUND BRANDS HATCH....YOU NAMED IT AND HE WOULD DO IT.
I LOVE AFRICA AND WAS CONSTANTLY TELLING HIM THAT HE SHOULD COME WITH ME. WE BOTH DISCUSSED CLIMBING KILIMANJARO AND HE HAD EVERY INTENTION TO DO SO BUT UNFORTUNATELY AT THE END OF 2016 HE WAS DIAGNOSED WITH BRAIN CANCER. DESPITE FIGHTING THIS MOST AGGRESSIVE TYPE OF BRAIN CANCER FOR 18 MONTHS HE FINALLY SUCCUMBED AND PASSED AWAY LAST APRIL. WHEN HE PASSED THE BBC ANNOUNCED HIM TO BE ONE OF BRITAIN'S TOP 8 ICONIC ATHLETES, SOMETHING HE WOULD OF BEEN VERY PROUD OF.
AT HIS FUNERAL HIS WIFE, SARAH CHALLENGED ALL THOSE PRESENT TO DO SOMETHING OUTSIDE OF THE BOX, OUT OF THE COMFORT LEVEL AS ROB HAD ALWAYS DONE SO I CHOOSE TO DO THIS.
TO MAKE THINGS A LITTLE HARDER WE HAVE CHOSEN ONE OF THE LONGEST AND DIFFICULT ROUTES AND DECIDED TO SPEND AN ADDITIONAL NIGHT CLOSE TO THE, JUST SHORT OF 6,000 METRE SUMMIT DESPITE TEMPERATURES RECENTLY RECORDED OF -15 (WITHOUT THE WIND CHILL).
FOR SOMEONE WHO IS USED TO LIVING IN THE CARIBBEAN AT SEA LEVEL I THINK THAT THE COLD AND ALTITUDE DEFINITELY WARRANTS BEING OUT OF MY COMFORT LEVEL!!!!
ASIDE FROM ROB, WHO I KNOW WILL BE BY MY SIDE I HAVE DECIDED TO REACH OUT TO YOU ALL TO HELP SO MANY DESPERATE DOGS AND CATS ON THE ISLAND OF ST. MAARTEN.
SINCE HURRICANE IRMA, THE ANIMALS ON THIS ISLAND ARE IN DESPERATE NEED. UNFORTUNATELY THE GOVERNMENT HERE DOES NOT SUPPORT ANIMALS. THERE ARE NO SHELTERS OR SUPPORT FOR THEM.
THE ORGANISATIONS HERE RELY SOLELY ON VOLUNTEERS AND DONATIONS FROM THE PUBLIC AND WITH SO MANY PEOPLE LEAVING THE ISLAND AFTER IRMA AND LEAVING THERE PETS TO FEND FOR THEMSELVES THE SITUATION IS NOW DESPERATE.
I HAVE CHOSEN 4 ANIMAL CHARITIES; ANIMAL DEFENDERS, SXM PAWS, SXM ANIMAL RESCUE AND I LOVE MY ISLAND DOG. ALL DONATIONS RAISED WILL BE SHARED EQUALLY BETWEEN THESE 4 CHARITIES.
THESE FUNDS WILL GO TOWARDS SPAYING, NEUTERING, MEDICINES, EMERGENCY CARE (FROM HUMAN ABUSE AND SEVERE NEGLECT, HIT AND RUN) AND FOOD
SXM ANIMAL RESCUE TEAM: Established 7 years ago, works with a small group of volunteers feeding stray dogs, cats, pigs and other animals. They spay and neuter as many animals as possible, working with most of the vets on the island.
SXM PAWS: Established with the broad objective of rescuing, sheltering, giving medical care, spay/neuter, and setting up adoptions for stray animals on the island. They have created a foster program for the rescues that enter the Paws family. Once vetted, SXM Paws facilitates adoptions, coordinating all logistics if animal is adopted off island. Paws is in the process of building out an adoption center located at the newly opened The Island Vet opened by Dr. Ruth on the Dutch side. They are committed to aiding animals that find themselves in harms way due to ignorance, neglect, cruelty or unforeseen circumstances. This is only possible with the support and commitment of the community and donations from their supporters.
ANIMAL DEFENDERS: Founded in 2012, their main focus is to spay/neuter, vaccinate, feed and provide aftercare of the many strays on the island. They also focus on education by organizing awareness campaigns for the community to become more involved in helping our voiceless friends, as well as adoptions. All work is carried out by volunteers, the the love of the animals.
I LOVE MY ISLAND DOG: Association on the French side was created 2006 with the intention to create an animal shelter. Our dream became reality 2009 when the Collectivity leased us land and gave us subsidies in order to build. Sadly 2017 our shelter got totally destroyed with hurricane Irma (our 40 dogs were placed in foster homes). We now are trying to rebuild, hopefully more solid and with a new team running it. Meanwhile the Headquarter of the foundation welcomes dogs in need.
