Clonmult Ambush Centenary Commemoration
Donation protected
On Sunday 20th February 1921 the Flying Column of the Fourth Battalion, First Cork Brigade was attacked by a unit of British military at their training camp near Clonmult village, seven miles north east of Midleton in East Cork. Twelve members of the Flying Column were killed during the battle and eight taken captive. Subsequently two of these prisoners were executed.
The Clonmult battle resulted in the greatest loss of life suffered by the Volunteers in a single engagement during the War of Independence.
A committee of the local community is working at interpreting the site and organising the centenary commemoration in February 2021.
