Call out .... IMMORTALISING THE CLYDESDALE HORSE & JETTY TRUCK
The Edithburgh Jetty turns 150 years in April 2023 and to commemorate this iconic landmark the township has a unique opportunity to commission a full sized metal sculpture of a Clydesdale horse as a memorial to the thousands of wonderful work horses that were the backbone of the town hauling salt, gypsum, wheat, barley and wool to the Edithburgh port, in the late 18th to early 20th century.
The Clydesdale horses were synonymous with work in the local area on the Yorke Peninsula, hauling the jetty trucks to and fro with precious cargo to the Edithburgh Jetty which at the time was the third busiest port in South Australia.
The town has lost all historical buildings connected with this era, except one rusty trolley, a reminder of Edithburgh in its heyday, which the Museum will restore, with the Clydesdale, a sentinel, standing with it.
In this time of recovery from the 2019 Honiton fires, that came so close to destroying our town, we see the
Clydesdale statue as a historic marker, and most importantly, as a symbol of pride, resilience, strength and determination to keep our town alive.
The erection of this beautiful monument will not only keep the memory of this work horse alive, but contribute as a major tourist attraction on the Yorke Peninsula.
The proposed location of the Clydesdale Horse and jetty truck opposite the Edithburgh Museum will connect to the town's maritime history providing a visual educational link to how the town was once a major salt provider to South Australia.
