The Chicago Minority Medical Student Emergency Medicine (CMMSEM) program is a city wide cohort designed to expose underrepresented minority (URM) and LGBTQ rising 2nd year medical students to careers in academic and community emergency medicine (EM). 13 highly qualified individuals will have the opportunity to get first-hand clinical experience in the emergency department (ED). This program will highlight areas in research, mentorship, and residency preparation needed to excel in the ED. The program will be composed of 40 hours per week, spanning six weeks.

Medical students involved will be expected to conduct research projects under the guidance of a faculty member. Participants will meet with mentors to help guide their research ideas. Mentors will also aid in developing exemplary grant writing and research abilities through didactics. Projects will be presented at the culmination of the program and submitted to national conferences. CMMSEM expects the skills gained in this program to encourage participating medical students to familiarize themselves with independent research and become confident physicians.
