CMPD-Police Officer Brandy Casperson

Hey all! My name is Officer Kaite Abert and I am reaching out to you about a fellow coworker and someone I am also blessed to call a friend and sister in blue. On October 2nd of 2020, Officer Brandy Casperson’s police car was struck by a drunk driver while blocking the road for another crash on I-485. Officer Casperson suffered injuries to her neck and back and has been on light duty since the crash occurred. Officer Casperson has had a very difficult, stressful, and emotionally depleting experience trying to get the help she needs to get better and return to full duty. She has had several procedures on her neck and will be getting a fusion surgery in the upcoming months. This will most likely put her out of work and on further restrictions for weeks after. Officer Casperson has been fighting tirelessly for over two years to return to the job she loves.
Through her long road, she has exhausted her sick leave and vacation hours to supplement her worker’s comp pay. After that was all gone, her pay dropped to 2/3 and she has been struggling. Officer Casperson is a single mom of 2 teenagers and has tried her hardest to provide for them the life they deserve but she is barely making her bills, so obviously doing extra activities and traveling is out of the question. Not only has Brandy been out of work for so long, she has accrued medical bills due to her injuries that workers comp refuses to reimburse her for. Brandy returned to work for a short while but is in and out due to her injuries and often still cannot get out of bed. This all affects her pay. This all affects her life. She should not be struggling to pay her bills due to an injury on duty.
Not only has Brandy had to take on the tremendous stress of how to pay her bills but has also had to deal with a recent family tragedy. Before thanksgiving, Brandy’s father suddenly and unexpectedly passed away. Brandy had to travel to Florida to take care of his affairs and pay for all his final arrangements since she is his only remaining family. Another financial strain was with her housing. We all know that anywhere near or around Charlotte is not cheap and only getting more expensive! Brandy’s rent was just increased but she could not find another place to live in her area and if she moved she would have to remove her children from their schools and everything they know. This was another huge unexpected financial responsibility that she had to add to the pile. Since I have known Brandy, I have come to know what a hardworking and dedicated officer she is to our department and community. I have also seen what a dedicated and devoted mom she is to her two children. Brandy deserves some help and I am reaching out to you all in hopes that maybe you can relieve some of her financial burdens. As long as I have known Brandy, she has had to be extremely frugal just to cover the basics in life due to her injury. Many times, she had to worry about how she can pay her bills and put food on the table at the same time. Her accrual of doctor’s bills, her increase in rent, her decrease in pay and her having to obtain a worker’s comp lawyer to help her get the care she needs has had a tremendous strain on her. Casperson deserves our help so that she can focus on recovery and not worry about how to cover her bills and take care of her family.
Anything helps and I hope we can spread the word far and wide for our sister in blue. Please donate. If you cannot donate, please share. It’s that time again to take care of one of our own, who has sacrificed so much and who has fought so hard to get her life back and return to work.
