Eagle Project - Coach Johnson's Memorial Butterfly Garden

Hello, my name is Nicholas. I am a Life Scout of Boy Scout Troop 125 in Wellington, Florida. I designed and will build the Coach Johnson's Memorial Butterfly Garden at Calusa Elementary in Boca Raton, Florida.

In 2018, Coach Scott Johnson, a beloved Calusa Elementary School Physical Education Teacher for 21 years, passed away suddenly at the age of 49.

I attended Calusa Elementary from kindergarten through fifth grade. While there, Coach Johnson was my PE Teacher, my baseball coach and most of all, a meaningful mentor to me. He helped me through a very difficult time of my educational career. He was always there to steer me in the right direction and helped me make good choices. His wife, Kellie Johnson, was my Reading Teacher. His son, Peter, was a baseball teammate of mine. His daughters, Elena and Emily attended Calusa also.

I chose to build this garden for 3 purposes: to provide an educational area for the students and Garden Club members to learn about butterflies and their environment; to provide a seating area for parents when picking up their children from after care; and most of all, to honor Coach Scott Johnson for making a huge impact on my early educational career.

The garden will contain 12 ft x 12 ft U-shaped benches with attached planter boxes on the corners. The baron area will be revitalized with garden plants to attract butterflies. There will be a butterfly reservoir and pathway to give the students easy access to this new, educational area.
