As many know, on Sunday, May 27th, after a week of "burning" in his throat and chest, my dad finally went to Herrin ER with chest pain. After blood work, it was discovered that his troponin levels were elevated indicating that he was either having a heart-attack or had had a heart attack. He was immediately transferred to Memorial Hospital of Carbondale via ambulance. An angiogram discovered that my dad had major blockage. His RCA was 100% blocked, 1st Diag 100% blocked, and the LAD (main coronary artery) known as the "widow maker" was 80% blocked.
On Tuesday, May 29th, he underwent triple bypass open heart surgery. Dr. Watson was able to use the LIMA or Left Internal Mammary Artery to perform a jump graft supplying blood to 2 parts of the heart. Unfortunately, the RIMA was not long enough and a vein was taken from the leg. The downside of that is that veins last no longer than 7-10 years.
For a man that's never even worn glasses and didn't have a primary care physician, life has changed drastically! He is now on 9 different medications and will have to change his diet and exercise routine. He will have many doctors to report to regularly and lots of tests and blood-work to follow.
In addition, my dad will need home health care to help get him back on his feet and healthy again. For anyone that knows my dad, he works nonstop to provide for his family. Although he is a teacher and coach, he also teaches drivers education and the summer months are his busiest time of the year.
Although we have insurance, we have a very high deductible and other expenses that were supposed to be paid with money that would have been made this summer. While we do not have a plan at this time, we know that God is good all the time and He will provide.
