Coastal Organics Cooperative Generator Fund

Donation protected
In October of 2019, we lost electricity for four and a half days during the Northern California Fires. Our portable generator could only power a few basic needs at the co-op. This meant we couldn’t adequately serve our community during that time and we lost thousands of dollars in perishable goods.

Since power outages are a fact of life here on the coast — due to winter storms and now PG&E shutoffs — we have purchased and will soon be installing a new generator large enough to operate the store at full capacity during any future outages. This standby generator automatically switches on when the electricity goes out any time, night or day. Our monthly electricity usage peaks at about 22,000 watts and our big refrigerators require 3-phase, 240-volt supplies, so portable generators cannot do the job.

The co-op needs funding to pay for the generator equipment and installation, which will cost us a total of $18,000. So far we have raised $11,000 in no-interest loans and $600 of donations toward this effort. A huge thank-you to those of you who have already helped — and we still have quite a way to go!

During the electricity outages, the new generator will enable us to provide:
• a safe, warm, well-lighted place serving hot food, coffee, and drinks
• fresh filtered water if your well pump is out
• ice
• your regular groceries and emergency supplies
• electricity to  charge your cell phones, tablets, and laptops

Please help by donating anything you can toward powering the co-op and your community!
