This is a fundraising campaign for 19 year old Cobyn Murphy from Lacombe, Alberta. He suffered a terrible accident while mountain biking on August 29, 2016 when he fractured his cervical spine. His injury was at a very high level of the neck (C3/4) and as a result he has paralysis of both arms and legs (quadriplegia). Cobyn was an amazing athlete prior to this accident and he excelled at hockey, baseball, mountain biking and surfing, to name a few.
Cobyn had been adjusting to life and was looking to pursue post-secondary education. His mom and dad (Dave and Misty Murphy) and his younger brother Liam (his only sibling), were extremely supportive. They were all coming to terms with their “new normal” and life was moving forward. Liam and Cobyn were extremely close.
Then the unthinkable happened. Liam, who was 17, was killed on November 25, 2018. Liam was driving on a highway, hit some ice, and his vehicle rolled end over end. Tragically, he was killed instantly.
It's unimaginable. Quite simply, there are no words to properly describe this devastation.
We are trying to help them and here is how….
Cobyn had previously been using a special bike – the RT300 FES arm and leg system. It is a rehabilitation bike designed to help people with neurological injuries. While using it, Cobyn’s appetite improved and he was able to sleep better. He was slowly regaining some of the feeling further down his arms. The bike was also helping to maintain Cobyn's available range of movement through all of his extremities. For Cobyn, regular use of this type of bike helps to prevent issues such as pneumonia and blood clots. Cobyn was using this bike was on loan until 2 weeks ago when it was given to another family.
The cost of the bike is $30,000 plus a few extras for custom fittings and attachments. Let’s work together to get Cobyn this bike!
Please give what you can. It’s a difficult economy and we understand donation amounts will vary, but please consider the Murphy's loss and realize that every little bit helps.
If you can’t afford to donate, please keep the Murphy family in your prayers this holiday season.
