Empower Students with Coding and Design Thinking
Tax deductible
Help us bring computer science and design thinking skills to high school students around the world. Today, Code.X brings Stanford volunteer instructors to inspire and teach in Palestine and Albania. Over the past few years, we've made transformational impact on our students and built broad interest in STEM, and we need your help to cover operational costs.
Update: Thank you so much for your support in meeting our original goal! With this, we'll be able to continue our 2020 operations. We're updating our target to our stretch goal of $20,000. The extra funds will help jumpstart new pilot programs, by allowing us to help new partners get off the ground.
Code.X runs a three-year program teaching computer science and design thinking to high school students in emerging markets. Stanford University students serve as volunteer instructors during the summer, and partnerships with local on-site institutions allow local teachers to continue instruction throughout the year.
Background:
In 2015, we launched “Code for Palestine” with four volunteer instructors and 25 students. As the first initiative of its kind in the region, we aimed to attract the best and brightest students to STEM fields and promote Computer Science education more broadly.
Over the past five years, the program has emerged as the leading high school program in the West Bank and Gaza:
- Application volume has grown 20x
- Computer Science is now being taught in every middle-school, with Code for Palestine being credited by the Ministry of Education as the catalyst
- Nearly 90% of our graduates have gone on to pursue computer science in university
- Students come from diverse backgrounds: 52% of students are female, and 65% of students are from public or refugee schools
In 2019, 150 students participated under the instruction of 20 volunteers. Parties in various countries - ranging from Jordan to Nigeria to Brazil - have now reached out to us to bring the same program to their locale. In 2019, Code for Albania launched with support from the national government and local corporations.
Our Ask: We’re asking for your support to sustain this impact and expand it to other countries.
We operate with long-term sustainability in mind, using a model that promotes local ownership: over the past five years, the PalTel Group Foundation has taken full ownership of operating and funding Code for Palestine on the ground, with Code.X providing instructor recruitment, training, and curriculum development.
Today, Code.X is powered by a dedicated group of volunteers who work year round to enable the program’s success. As we look to expand to additional regions, we’re asking for your support to cover our minimal operational costs. Out of our estimated $10,000 annual budget, we spend 20% on instructor recruitment & training, 50% on program setup, and 30% on administration (overhead for work meetings, community building, insurance, etc).
Your donation allows our core volunteer team to continue making a transformational impact on students around the world. Thank you for your support!
Akram Sbaih is a graduate of Code for Palestine’s inaugural cohort. He is now a 2nd year student at Stanford University studying Computer Science.
