Cody’s story
Cody Sheldon Pelletier is a kind, caring, hardworking young man, who is devoted to his Hockey, loved ones, fur babies and work!
As a child Cody wanted to be a Police Officer, Fire Fighter or Hockey Player. While he was confident that the Toronto Maple Leafs would win when he became their goalie, he ultimately decided to become a Police Officer and graduated from the Police Foundations course in 2016.
Cody started playing hockey at the age of 11 , the following year he played goalie. It was like a match made in heaven. Now 21 years old, he still loves playing hockey every chance he gets!
As well he loves his job working for Hanwha L&C and everyone he works with. Even on the days he wasn’t feeling that great, he still managed to make his way into work and try to attempt the day.
At 21 years old, Cody was preparing his dream wedding in Mexico and was looking forward to building a life with his soul mate, Ashley.
But 3 weeks before the wedding Cody went to the hospital on April 23rd and was sent home and told he had a virus (sore throat & vomiting). Later on that night Cody started getting severe pain in his chest and was still having issues with his throat. The following day, April 24th, reluctant to go back to the hospital , due to him not wanting to miss work and being a stubborn boy , Ashley finally convinced him to go back to the local ER. After being taken in right away and having a normal abdominal X-ray and then an ultrasound which showed a "ball", it led to his CT where they ultimately found his large (13.6x8.1x8.6 cm) pelvic tumour with other spots in his abdomen. Being admitted for pain control and further tests they found he had Strep throat as well as stomach/duodenum ulcers. A biopsy from one of the spots in his abdomen was done for diagnosis.
While waiting for the results of the biopsy, Cody and Ashley felt it was best to cancel the wedding in Mexico. But Cody was still determined to give his fiance the beach wedding of her dreams. So with the help of friends and family they planned a wedding in 2 days. On May 5th Cody and Ashley officially became husband and wife on the beach in Grand Bend in a ceremony so beautiful even the Minister cried.
2 days later Cody and Ashley were told that the biopsy showed that the tumor was a sarcoma cancer. Then they found out that the biopsy had been sent to Toronto for more testing as they weren’t entirely sure what is was or how to best treat.
After waiting a month, on June 7th they finally got the results.
The cancer was an extremely rare type of Sarcoma called Desmoplastic Small Round Cell Tumor.
It is stage 4 aggressive cancer, with no possibility of being removed surgically or radiated due to its location.
Cody is now preparing to start an aggressive Chemo protocol. Through all of this Cody has remained confident that he will kick this cancer in the butt.
He was even able to follow through on his plan of growing his hair long enough to donate.
Sadly Cody can no longer work and has been put on short term going into long term disability. As well he is no longer allowed to enjoy playing any of the sports he enjoys. It frustrates him not being able to work and being restricted from sports, but he’s happy as can be that he still gets to spend time with his wife, pups and family. Cody has been staying so positive and giving everything he has to fight this!
As you can imagine with Cody being unable to work and Ashley needing to stay by his side to help him through this, they will face some financial difficulties. We don’t want them to have to worry and stress about paying their bills and paying for any uncovered medical expenses. We want to ensure that they can focus all of their energy on beating this cancer together.
All donations and prayers for Cody and Ashley are greatly appreciated.
