I have been a foster home for my local humane society for a 3 years, specializing in litters of puppies and kittens. In that time i've fostered over 220 anima. I take of care of them, in all aspects, providing food, toys, puppy pads, cat litter, etc. until they are fit for adoption. It's a lot of work, but I love doing it. One of the important points of being fit for adoption is socialization. So, about 2 years ago, I started taking the litters to visit skilled nursing homes and assisted living facilites in my area.
Little did I realize what an impact it would make in the lives of these elderly residents. People just light up. It's a wonderful thing to see, but even greater to be able to make it happen. I soon knew this is what i wanted and needed to do.
Unfortunately, doing this has depleted my personal savings. The money raised will allow me to continue to visit the homes and care for the animals. It will also help me to build on what I've started. My goal is to be able to take the animals to a different facility every day and I can't do that without your help. It will also assist me to take on animals that have more intensive medical needs.
I don't have the words to tell you what it would mean to me and the people that I visit. But I will share with you the following encounter, near and dear to my heart:
Recently, I was at a facility that I visit often and ran into a woman in the hallway. She said: "my mom (name removed) is in the hospital dying, but I'm so glad to run into you here. My Mother lights up every time she talks about you and the puppies. And she has talked about you so many times in the last few days. I just wanted to thank you for what you did for my mother." As we both teared up and parted way was when I began to really understand what a difference the animals can make in the lives of those we visit.
I absolutely LOVE what i'm doing and i need your help to allow me to continue bringing joy to these elderly people. I am in the process of starting a non profit 501(c)(3) for funding in the future, but the expenses of starting it are more than I thought and the papework and approval can take up to a year.
