Coleman Family: Recovering from Hurricane Isaias

HELP NEEDED:

The Coleman family is in need of $2,300 to pay for damages to their home caused by Tropical Storm Isaias. Our family is currently displaced and will remain so until our home is repaired, safe, and inhabitable.

THE COLEMAN FAMILY:

Adam Coleman, Candice, Lilyana, Jordan, Kaiden, Maxwell, and Princess Pepsi (Cat)

WHAT HAPPENED:

2020 has been a crazy year for everybody and as of a few days ago it got even crazier for my family and I!

On August 3, 2020 Tropical Storm Isaias hit our home town of Hampton, Virginia with heavy rain and wind gusts up to 70 miles per hour. Tropical Storm Isaias caused flooding, power outages, and widespread property destruction across the Hampton Roads Area. Sadly, my family and I were not spared from the storm damage as fierce winds knocked over a large tree in our backyard causing it to fall onto our house. The damage to our home is very serious!

The damages we are aware of at this time include:

-At least 3 large holes in the roof

-Gutters torn down

-HVAC unit destroyed

-Broken rafter in roof

-Busted vent pipe in attic

-Water damage inside the home

-Possible structural damage to the home

-Destroyed part of neighbor’s fence

Thankfully, we were not home at the time the tree hit our house. We were visiting with my mother this past weekend and upon seeing the weather forecast decided to stay a few extra days until Isaias passed by. It wasn’t until we returned home about a day after the storm that we discovered the large tree still laying up against the house and covering over half the backyard!

WE NEED HELP:

While we do have homeowner’s insurance, we are facing very real costs that we are not in position to cover on our own. The first financial hurdle we have to tackle is the removal of the tree which is still leaning on the house. Due to the size of the tree the lowest estimate for tree removal I received was $2,300. This will include tree removal as well as putting a covering on the roof to prevent further water damage and pest infestation. According to our insurance company, we will have to pay this $2,300 out of pocket because they will not make any payments without the insurance adjustor’s damage report and the insurance adjustor cannot make a proper assessment while the tree is still there. We know that at least $2,000 of the tree removal cost is not reimbursable because our insurance policy has a $2,000 deductible.

If our insurance company, for whatever reason, chooses to not cover the damages then we will be facing a far greater amount to restore our home to being safe and inhabitable. If that happens then I will provide additional updates as needed. For now, we are focusing on the challenge in front of us which is the up-front cost of $2,300.

As the old saying goes “Home is where the heart is.” Honestly, I don’t think that statement has ever resonated with me as much as it does right now. Our home is more than just where we live. My wife and I are home-schoolers, so our house is the primary location for our children’s education. Our home is also the headquarters for Tru-ID Apologetics Ministries. It pains me to think about how right now water damage is working its way through the room we just remodeled for the office where I write, record, and go live on Youtube with ministry content for Tru-ID.

My family and I are asking for you to prayerfully consider helping us to get back in our home. We are setting an initial Go Fund Me goal for $2,300 which will go toward our first challenge of removing the large tree from our home.
