Colon Removal Surgery for Bree

When Bree was just 13 it was discovered she had familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP) and a large amount of polyps in her colon. FAP is a genetic condition which can be a precursor to colon cancer. Bree's grandfather had colon cancer and recently passed away from it, her mother had her colon removed at 32 and one of her aunts has also had to have her colon removed. It’s also possible Bree can pass this onto her children.
Over the last few years Bree has continued to do annual screenings and at each screening it was determined the amount of polyps were increasing and surgery to remove her colon was inevitable. At her last colonoscopy in November 2021 the doctor told her the polyps were in the high hundreds and possibly over a thousand and surgery to remove her colon was something we needed to consider immediately as any of these polyps could turn cancerous.
We thought we had a few more years before surgery and Bree is not financially prepared for this right now. While our insurance is great and is going to cover nearly 100% of the surgery and follow ups, there are other personal expenses Bree has which she is asking for help in covering during recovery.
Recovery for this surgery is long. At a minimum, if everything goes perfectly, she’s looking at being out of work from 4-6 months. However, any complications can extend that to as much as 9-12 months (both her mom and aunt were down for nearly a year due to complications).
Ultimately we’d like to reach $8000, this will help cover her expenses while she is unable to work and allow for worst case scenario for recovery time. This is already an extremely stressful and difficult time for a 20 year old, being able to ensure financially she will be ok would just eliminate one of the stresses she has.
