Coloratura Artist Residency
Donation protected
I've been accepted to my first artist residency! For the whole month of February, I’ll be at Elsewhere Studios in rural Colorado, exploring my artistic practice with Coloratura, and developing my voice as a painter and musician.
I had initially planned to try to self-fund the cost of this adventure (residency fees + travel + supplies + food + a month of lost wages + design upgrades) but a dear friend encouraged me to start a crowdfunding campaign to help offset some of the costs and relieve some financial burden.
She reminded me that 1) I am surrounded by a loving, enthusiastic, supportive community that wants to see me succeed and 2) I need to get out of my own way and stop burning myself out by trying to do everything all alone.
That's why I'm humbly asking for your help to get to Colorado so that I can expand my creative horizons.
This residency will provide me with the time, space and capacity to:
- Compose more intentional, longer form soundscapes - My current soundscapes are mostly improvised, but I want to create more structured compositions that vividly encapsulate the relationship between the colors I paint and the sounds that emerge. I plan to use my residency time to improve my painting technique, increase my competency with my music production software, and flesh out many of the musical snippets that have been bouncing around my brain for years.
- Improve process of painting on natural fabrics instead of metal or conductive glass - Last month, I had an “aha” moment and decided to experiment using Coloratura to paint on linen, cotton and silks. Since Coloratura relies on electrical conductivity to function, I wasn’t sure that painting on fabrics would work. To my delight and amazement, the results so far have been wildly successful and absolutely gorgeous! Throughout my life, fabric has played such a pivotal role in my development as a artist and a person, so I’m thrilled to incorporate textile painting into my artistic practice. I can’t wait to show you the finished product!
- Work with larger canvases on a new portable version of Coloratura - The current model of Coloratura has served me well for the past 7 years, but I’ve outgrown it! A significant portion of the money I raise will go towards funding a new portable design that is modular enough to fit into luggage, but can also accommodate canvases of up to 5x5ft, a major upgrade from the 16x20in limitations of the old model. Not only will this new design allow me to travel safely to Colorado via plane & train (my car cannot handle the Rocky Mountains in the winter!) it will enable me to easily travel anywhere in the world in the future, something that is prohibitively expensive with the current version. The design changes to this model will also extend to the smaller version of Coloratura that I take to schools, community centers and public events; this new version will be height adjustable to better accommodate small children and individuals with disabilities.
I hope you'll accept my invitation to join me on this exciting journey. Your investment in my artistic vision will help me make some much needed improvements to Coloratura and will allow to expand my work beyond its current borders.
Your love and support and encouragement are greatly appreciated!
Warmly,
Camry
