Colorful Art Installation on the MKT Trail

Donation protected
The Katy Trail is a wonderful part of Columbia's community where people walk, bike, or run immersed in nature to escape the bustle of their day.  After exploring the Katy the trail myself, especially the MKT Trail, I became intrigued by the Hinkson Creek Bridge and how the evening light projects triangular shadows across the pathway, making it a favorite moment to revisit.

I propose a site-specific installation using the Hinkson Creek Bridge No. 12 structure to accentuate the light experienced along the trail. The installation will consist of red, blue, yellow, and orange translucent, colored vinyl shapes, and will be attached by paracord to the existing trusses of Bridge No. 12. During the day, sunlight will filter through the vinyl to project iridescent shadows across the ground. The colors I chose for the installation compliment the trails conservation efforts: yellow to mimic black-eyed susans, blue for the sky, red for cardinal birds, and orange for the day-lilies.

This artwork will benefit everyone who uses the MKT Trail, bringing a new experience and a meditative moment of color among the trees. Viewers will be able to move through and interact with ever-changing, colorful light. To make this installation happen, I need support from you--Columbia's amazing creative community! Since Columbia does not have funds available for projects outside its regular budget, I submitted this proposal to the Public Arts Commission through the Gift of Artwork's process. I received approval for this project from Parks and Rec and support from the Office of Cultural Affairs on Friday, July 10th.

I am now looking for financial support to purchase materials which include colored, translucent vinyl, paracord, stop toggles, and grommets to complete each panel. I will also use funds to pay myself while I spend the next three weeks sewing and installing the panels. I am hoping to have the installation completed by August 7th. The artwork will remain in place until early Fall when the site is no longer activated by the summer sun.

Thank you very much for your help in bringing this project to life! Your donation will not only manifest my vision for a public artwork, but will also support how public space can strengthen communities and neighborhoods. This artwork is about the act of discovery, seeing something for the first time. As visitors come across this artwork, experiencing the colorful panels, the moment will unite them with the hundreds of other trail users who have already seen it. The power of a shared experience is empathy and ultimately a sense of belonging.

Thank you.
