Coltrane’s Swim Against Malaria

Tax deductible
Hello everyone! My name is Coltrane Joseph and I will be attempting to conquer the historic Hellespont Swim in August 2024 to support the Against Malaria Foundation. I'm diving into a challenge that echoes the legacy of the great poet Lord Byron, a figure of inspiration and courage, who was the first known person to swim across these iconic waters. Now, I follow in his wake not only to honor his memory but also to make a lasting impact through this fundraiser for the Against Malaria Foundation.

Why This Challenge?
In addition to my personal connection with Lord Byron and the historical significance of the Hellespont Swim, I am driven by a deep commitment to making a meaningful difference in the world. Inspired by the principles outlined in "Doing Good Better" by William MacAskill, I've chosen to dedicate this swim to support the Against Malaria Foundation (AMF). I believe that everybody has the potential to do a large amount of 'good' to make a significant positive change in the lives of others.

Why Malaria Prevention?
Malaria remains a silent killer and is severely underfunded; however, our efforts can make a significant impact. For every $100,000 raised for AMF, we can provide and distribute 10,600 life-saving bed nets (primarily to sub-Saharan Africa), creating a tangible shield against malaria-carrying mosquitoes.

The Impact of Your Donation:
  • Highly Effective: AMF is consistently rated among the most effective charities by organizations like GiveWell.
  • Tangible Impact: Bed net distribution directly saves lives and prevents the spread of malaria.
  • Transparency: AMF is renowned for its transparency, providing detailed information about its operations, funding allocation, and the distribution of bed nets.

Why Bed Nets?
Insecticide-treated bed nets are a cost-effective intervention with a proven track record of reducing malaria transmission. Not only do they protect individuals, but they also contribute to reducing the overall mosquito population, impacting malaria transmission at the community level.

Our Goal: $4,500
Together, we aim to raise $4,500, the total number in meters of the Hellespont swim. This money will fund the distribution of bed nets, protect vulnerable communities, and contribute to the global effort to eradicate malaria. By reaching this goal, we statistically have the potential to save the lives of 4 children and can improve the health and livelihood of many others!

How You Can Help:
  • Donate: Every contribution, no matter the size, brings us closer to our goal.
  • Share: Spread the word on social media, within your networks, and let's make a collective impact.

Join Me in This Journey:
As I plunge into the waters that Lord Byron once crossed, I invite you to join me in this dual quest—honoring history and saving lives. Let's turn the waves of the Hellespont into ripples of positive change to prevent the unnecessary loss of life to malaria.

Thank you for being part of this meaningful journey.

Hellespont Swim: A Challenge Across History
The Hellespont Swim, also known as the Dardanelles Swim, is a daring open water challenge set against the stunning backdrop of the strait that separates Europe from Asia. The race, hosted by SwimTrek, traces a 4.5km path connecting the cities of Eceabat and Canakkale. The waters are rich with history, and the currents present a formidable challenge, making this swim an extraordinary feat of both physical endurance and mythical homage.
