Comal Y Canela Community Food Bank

Donation protected
Raising money to support a grassroots community foodbank, providing grocery bags - no questions asked - to some of Toronto's most vulnerable families

A $10 donation will feed a family for a day
with extra for breakfast the next morning. We know that times are tough for many, so this humble ask is for a donation of any kind. It takes a village...and every little bit helps!

Check out this excellent BlogTO video for the full story.

“If we don’t pitch in and help our neighbours out — if everyone waits around for somebody else to do it — who’s going to get help then?”

More about the campaign
Comal Y Canela is a tiny restaurant with a big heart. Opened in early 2018 in north-west Toronto. Their food and care for the community are both remarkable.

Comal Y Canela is located on the northwest corner of Jane and Lawrence, an area of Toronto where many who live at or near the poverty line find a home. Numerous families here have just arrived in Canada, and as such may have no support system and are not able to access programs and funds to help them in the best of times. They face many barriers in learning the language, customs and transit system, just to name a few.

Even before the isolation began this vulnerable community was the first and hardest hit, as they were already in an insecure position for food and basic needs.

Growing up in Weston after immigrating from Mexico, Yasmen struggled with these same insecurities. So when she saw the desperation of those in her community she immediately acted to help, accepting donations and paying out of pocket to start a food bank operating Wednesdays out of the restaurant. Quickly the demand has swelled with over 100 families now depending on it for sustenance.

This is not happening a world away, these are our neighbors and community members, starving and desperate, just next door.  Our hope at this time, with your help, is to provide Yasmen with enough funding to purchase foodbank supplies for the next month, getting food to this vulnerable group and showing them that they are welcome and they are not alone.
