     Hi, my name is Leon Caldwell and I have spent the better part of my life growing good produce that everyone enjoys. No chemicals, no pesticides, no herbicides, nor man-made products, no short-cuts, and very little rest to bring natural healing gifts of nature to your door.

     I first started my venture into commercial organic farming in 1987 and became one of the first certified organic farmers in the state of Texas. I never use chemicals, common manures, or waste products in growing my produce; instead, I developed my own fertilizer which contains a full spectrum of vitamins and minerals, contributing to the health and flavor of our produce. In addition to the aforementioned, I recently introduced botanical algae, which accelerates the growth and health of the plants without compromising our commitment to growing organic produce.

   Over the last 27 years, Comanche Oaks farm has fed countless families and we have watched as their children grew up before our eyes, nourished by the good food that we grew for them.  Meanwhile, I was also raising my own five children without a wife present. I was dad and mom, and a farmer too. It was a long, hard, expensive battle, but it all worked out. My four girls and one boy helped out a lot after they got big enough to understand the chores. Little hands can do a lot when they have to. They are all pretty much grown now, and are all doing very well. The girls are pursuing other professions, but my son is majoring in agriculture management at TSU in San Marcos.

            You are probably wondering why I need money so desperately now, 27 years later.  For the first 20 years that I owned my farm, the man who owned the property next to me leased his water well to me and I had all the water that I needed to run a functioning organic farm. I could grow as much produce as I wanted without the worry that I couldn’t take care of it, therefore Comanche Oaks fed many people and provided produce to many restaurants and grocery stores. However, when my neighbor passed away, the property was sold and I lost all access to the water. For the last several years I have not had enough water to plant as much as I had in the past and have had to drastically cut production. City water is much too expensive and requires a filter in order to keep the chlorine from harming the plants. Although we have storage tanks catching the rainfall, frankly it just doesn’t rain enough in central Texas to sustain an organic farm through the grueling summer heat. The rain water that we are fortunate enough to catch must be carried to each plant by hand. This means that at age 71, I am still forced to carry two 5-gallon buckets full of water at a time all day, every day in temperatures frequently above 100 degrees during the summer. I have found myself struggling just to pay my bills every month due to lack of produce to sell.

            There are lots of people who count on us to be at the local farmers markets every week, as well as the local restaurants and delivery services whom we have supplied for many years. However, without an adequate water well and irrigation system, Comanche Oaks simply will not survive.

            Living longer is achieved by putting the good stuff in your body and expelling the bad. We help you to do both. I am looking to raise $35,000 for the equipment necessary for the survival of Comanche Oaks farm, any additional funds raised will go directly into further improving the farm. 

Water well and electric cable- approximately $10,000

Irrigation supplies and shade covering- approximately  $12,000

Better equipment (tiller, row planter, disc harrow)- $2,500- $4,000

Working capitol- $5,000- $6,000

Deer proof fence- $3,000
