My name is Kyle Finn Dempsey and I'm a film maker and photographer. I'm traveling the country living out of my car and filming a story meant to inspire people to chase their dreams. My main camera recently malfunctioned and now the screen won't light up and I can't use it. The next day my drone fell right out of the sky and into Lake Superior from a "battery error." I am very experienced with both my camera and my drone and in both instances there was nothing I could have done. I bought both of these tools myself and it hurt my heart to watch my best equipment vanish in thin air. I hardly have enough money for gas and food and cannot afford to buy a new camera and drone. I'm now in Minnesota without the ability to continue making my movie and telling the story in the way it needs to be told. I'm asking for help to get my equipment in any way I can. Below are the chapters of the movie I have made so far on my journey. I film, edit, write and act the entire series by myself. I really want to keep going and am so thankful for the support I have received so far along the way. I truly hope I can continue on. Below the videos is the detailed account of my journey and everything that happened up to this point. Thank you so much for taking the time to read this.
Here's some of the photos I've taken at the cabin in Minnesota I'm currently at.
I recently quit my job as a news videographer to chase my dream of traveling the United States filming a movie about human truths and trying to inspire people to follow their passions and perservere through the hardships in life. (Ironically enough, this SOS is me trying to do exactly that.) I packed up everything I own in my little car and have been living off granola bars and tuna while I sleep in the back with a sleeping bag. I saved up $780 in cash from working at the news station and it is literally all I have to my name. I told myself I would make it work no matter what. I absolutely love every minute of my journey so far, even though it can be painfully hard some days. The movie I'm making is called "Come Find Me'' and is released in 10 minute chapters on youtube. I left home on October 3rd and am on the third chapter of the story. I'm currently stationed at a cabin in Northern Minnesota where I have been filming for a few days to finish up the 3rd chapter. I do all the filming, aerial footage, photography, writing, and acting by myself, and it's a challenge I wouldn't trade for the world.
While filming a star lapse on thursday night 10/15/15 it began to sprinkle. I ran outside and grabbed my camera and brought it inside immediately. It's a Canon 6d and is supposed to be able to withstand light weather with no problems. It was still working when I brought it inside, but a few minutes later began to malfunction. I removed all the components and put it in a bag with rice and the next morning the camera turned on, but the screen won't light up. Essentially, it's useless without the screen because I can't shoot video or see what exposure levels I'm at when taking photos.
The next day (today) I took it to a camera shop in Duluth, Minnesota to see if they could fix it. Their only solution was to send it to Canon. Being on the road and living out of my car, I don't have the time or money to wait around for that. I promised myself and that I would release a chapter of the movie every sunday, and without my main camera, I dont know how that's possible.
As if it weren't bad enough, later on in the day I decided I would keep shooting on my older back-up camera and not let my situation effect me. I was also filming on my drone which I was so thankful to still have because it's one of the most valuable tools in my story telling. I put a fresh battery in, waited for it to power up and give me the green light. It was a typical flight that I've done hundreds of times in the same fashion. I flew it up over lake superior about 100 feet in the air when suddenly I received a message on my controller that said "battery error." Within seconds the drone was falling out of thin air and crashed right into the lake. I immediately canoed out to where it fell and could see it through the crystal clear water, about 25 feet below. There was nothing I could do. I couldnt believe my eyes when I watched it fall and my heart sunk into the dirt. My two most expensive, precious and creatively valuable tools had failed me and vanished within 24 hours. Now I'm sitting in a McDonalds in Northern Minnesota writing this letter of SOS to anyone out there willing to help me get my creative tools back. I'm chasing my dream, on the journey of a lifetime and I can't let anything hold me back. I will continue shooting on my backup camera until I find a way to aquire new equipment.
The canon 6d costs $1400 and the DJI phantom 3 professional is $1,300. If I could somehow raise $2,700 to get these tools back, I would be more than thankful. Everyday spent creating without my best tools is very tough for me. I just want to do my best in every way I can. I would love to personally send an image of choice to anyone who donates. Whether it be a wall print or a postcard or anything! You tell me! I would also like to give them "thanks" in the credits of the chapters of the movie and make sure their names are known. This is what I've dedicated my life to. I want to tell these stories and inspire people to chase their dreams. I hope someone out there can feel my passion and burning desire to power through this.
