Comics For Kids Fundraiser 2023

Donation protected
Of all the early indicators for a child's success both in school and later in life, few are more important than the ability to read.

So to help jumpstart an early excitement for reading, Mixed Tape Media and Ssalefish Comics partner up every year to host Comics For Kids. This is a fundraiser event where we raise money to purchase FIVE brand new all-ages comic books and distribute them to kids attending Title One elementary schools.**

We've been running this campaign since 2015, and it's always amazing to see the looks on kids' faces when we hand them a bag of comics and watch them as they immediately start to read about the adventures of their favorite characters.

What Books Will You Be Giving Away?

This year, we have selected five comic books that cover a wide diversity of perspectives and genres that we will be giving away to 2,000 kids.

Here are the books we have selected as part of the 2023 Free Comic Book Day Lineup:

As you can see, it's a mix of titles inspired by popular characters as well as original graphic novels.

Transperancy

When people run initiatives that are intended to help communities, it's important to be as transparent as possible in order to assure donors that their money is being properly spent. We took this message to heart last year, and created a full breakdown of how every single dollar was spent.

As you can see, every dollar was spent either purchasing books, bags, or paying for travel costs to get a professional cosplayer to help distribute books for kids. We are also applying the $360 remaining balance towards this year's campaign. Once we complete the 2023 project, we will issue another Financial Report just like the one we created in 2022.

FAQs

***What Is A Title One School?

Title One is a U.S. Government classification wherein 50% or more of the students meet the criteria for free or reduced lunch.

Can I Donate Old Comic Books For You To Give Away To Kids?

Yes, and no. We cannot give old comic book collections away to kids. This will create fighting between kids as well as potential content issues as many comic books (especially during the 90s) have violent and sexual content that could create issues in a public elementary school. Every book must meet the approval of the schools' principals, which would be impossible to do with assorted long boxes of old comics.

But if you have old comics, action figures, or other collectible items you want to donate, we are able to take them, sell them, and use those funds to help buy future books for kids. This year, we received donations totaling $200, and will be applying that to the balance as well. If you would like to donate anything, contact us through our GoFundMe page to arrange pickup or delivery.
