Mazingira Conservation Works : Laikipia, Kenya
Donation protected
Mazingira Conservation Works (MCW) supports the actions of local communities to protect vital habitats and conserve nature in critical locations around the world. With a particular focus on women and youth, we support this mission through local partnerships, responsible ecotourism, education and training, and grant(s) giving.
MCW is an initiative that supports practical interventions aimed at habitat protection, conservation education, community development and women led conservation enterprises.
The Greater Laikipia landscape is one of the most vital wildlife conservation landscapes in Kenya. The landscape hosts the highest populations of endangered large mammals in Kenya including half of the country’s black rhino population. Laikipia ecosystem is home to significant populations of elephants, Grevy’s zebra, Reticulated giraffe, wild dogs and other threatened animal, bird, and plant species. Land tenure in this landscape is predominantly private and communal, with only a few land units under formal protection, such as forest. A growing human population, changes in land use, closure of key wildlife corridors and dispersal areas, the climate crisis, and a push towards greater agricultural production threaten the future of conservation efforts.
MCW aims to improve the long-term conservation of vulnerable and threatened wildlife species and their habitats. It promotes sustainable use of natural resources in protected and conserved areas, and with communities in the Laikipia landscape. It is dedicated to working with communities, specifically women, indigenous groups, and youth. It supports initiatives that are courageous and creative in addressing wildlife and habitat conservation.
Your contribution supports the MCW and our 2024 fundraiser. Your early support inspires others to donate.
