Community of Color Campus Mural

Donation protected
Peace, y'all :)

I am reaching out to ask for support to fund a permanent mural at Hampshire College.

My name is Mikaela González, and I am currently working on my final year at Hampshire College. I study artivism, social movement theory, Latin American studies, and decolonial studies (to put it briefly!). I have also collaborated on mural projects with muralist Josh Sarantitis, while I also co-designed a mural in the Zapatista community caracol Oventik. Here are more examples of the kind of art work I have completed in the past couple of years: http://mikaelagonzalezdivii.crevado.com

As many might know, Hampshire's campus has been through some tumultous times, and can be very isolating and exhausting for students of color.

For my thesis, and as a response, I have been working on gathering funds and permission to make a collective on-campus mural as an act of community-building, reclamation of space, and an opportunity for healing and resilience. This project is meant to include many. Led by students of color,  the design, painting, and documentation process will be collective. The mural will contribute to a legacy of community public art and activism led by S.O.U.R.C.E. (Students of Under-Represented Cultures & Ethnicities).

These $6,000 will go to the material fabrication of the mural, food for meetings and painting sessions, as well as the cost for two NYC-based muralists to come help install the mural, give a workshop on community muralism, and give an open lecture about urban muralism as resistance.

In order to start painting in March, I will need the bulk of the funds by early or mid February, but the earlier the better.

I have applied for the Ethics and the Common Good Grant, the Hampshire College Presidential grants, and the Pope Foundation grant. I am still waiting to hear from the latter two. In the very happy instance that I raise more money than I need, I will start a pool of money that will fund future S.O.U.R.C.E. art projects, to keep artistic activism and community work for Hampshire's students of color more accessible in the future.

I will be posting photo and video documentation of the project, updating all who have donated through this site, as well as a separate website to be posted soon.

Any contribution would help make this project a reality!

As a thank you for donating, I am offering gifts of my artwork.
