Community of Jean Marie River, NWT
Hi, my name is Myra Sanguez and I am fundraising for my home community Jean Marie River, NT.
Jean Marie River’s traditional name, “Tthets’ek’ehdeli”, means “water flowing over clay”. The Tthek’éhdél Dene of what is today Jean Marie River First Nation were primarily nomadic people who hunted moose and caribou, trapped for beaver and fished the rivers and lakes of the Great Slave Plain. On May 7, 2021 the small community of Jean Marie River has suffered a severe flood where the people have lost their homes along with many items contained in the homes. Most of these houses are considered unlivable due to the amount of water damage done. The people of the community are being accommodated at Kelly Lake, NT (close to Jean Marie River Road Access) and Fort Providence, NT until there is an action plan to have them situated in a home.
As a community member, living in Yellowknife, I want to do the best I can for Jean Marie River. I am with a group on Facebook called Communities Coming Together that was created for helping those in need during the flood situation for the Deh Cho Region. I am also transporting any items needed to the community for those in need of supplies while creating this GoFundMe page.
These proceeds go to the community of Jean Marie River, NT and the people who were affected by this natural cause. I would like to say thanks to those who are working hard and putting together everything they can salvage for the Deh Cho Region. Mahsi Cho!
