CHAM Residents and PAs Community Outreach

As data continues to pour in, we are seeing that Hispanic, African American, Immigrant, and poor communities are being hit the hardest by COVID-19. The Bronx community is especially vulnerable to the spread and destruction of this pandemic and has been identified as a hotspot for the coronavirus infection. With each life lost, a family is torn apart placing daunting burdens on our already underserved community.
As Pediatric Residents and PAs at Children’s Hospital at Montefiore, we are grateful for the love and support we have received as healthcare workers, but also feel it is important now more than ever to extend ourselves to our Bronx community. Many communities much like ours have been disproportionately affected by the pandemic, and have limited resources in the face of insurmountable need. We would like to collaborate with several organizations that have identified and are actively addressing the essential and critical needs of our community during this time.
Our mission as a community hospital is to provide children with the best opportunity to lead active and healthy lives. We understand that the disparities faced by our community are long-standing and healthcare outcomes are directly related to having access to food and shelter. We hope that this fundraiser will at least partially aid families who are in dire need of these basic necessities.
We’re fundraising for the following organizations in the Bronx Community:
BronxWorks - a non-profit organization in the Bronx that helps individuals and families improve their economic and social well-being. From toddlers to seniors, they feed, shelter, teach, and support their neighbors to build a stronger community. During the COVID-19 pandemic, they created a BronxWorks Emergency fund to provide critical services to the community. There has been an overwhelming demand for food, emergency cash grants, and electronics such as laptops, tablets, and computers for Bronx students. The fund will also assist with the demand for PPE and cleaning supplies for front-line staff and program participants. http://www.bronxworks.org/
Part of the Solution (POTS) - a non-profit organization that assists individuals living in poverty on their journeys from crisis to stability and ultimately self-sufficiency. During COVID-19 they are offering a variety of services to some of the most vulnerable Bronx communities which include but are not limited to emergency food programs, workforce development, case management, and legal clinic. They are accepting essential items, volunteers, and monetary donations through an “Emergency Response Appeal”- fund . The fund will also support various POTS’ initiatives that must now be remotely operated as a result of the crisis. They have a goal of raising $500,000 by June 30, 2020. http://www.potsbronx.org/
