Community takes On City Hall: David vs Goliath
Old Ottawa East has launched an appeal of a City of Ottawa decision which would allow a developer to build not one, but several, buildings taller than originally defined by the Secondary Plan. The community must raise at least $20,000 to pay for legal and planning professionals to advance its appeal. Funds are needed immediately, before the end of December.
The City’s approval of a change in height shows lack of respect for the compromise Community Design Plan crafted by the Oblate Brothers (who owned the land), by City Planning staff, and by the community. It is typical of the “bait and switch” tactics displayed by developers. The increased height would result in higher than desired intensification, without necessarily having the supporting infrastructure, and would negatively impact the heritage aspect of the property. The community fears it will be the thin edge of the wedge, and would be precedent setting.
