Trees are the backbone of thriving ecosystems and once they are established they require little care or attention. On top of that they can be incredible sources of food that is both delicious and nutritious to humans and other creatures! Planting fruit and nut trees is central to regenerating our earth while creating food security! And planting them in publicly accessible places fosters true community building. We are aiming to facilitate the planting of 1,000 Community Fruit and Nut Trees in the fall of 2021 and we want your help!
We are seeking stewards who would love to host small orchards on their land or who would love to plant trees in their region. The trees must be on public property or have easy access by the public. Options include along publicly accessible edges of farms, residences and other private land, parks, businesses, churches, schools and other publicly accessible establishments.
What we are asking of tree stewards is that they agree to plant and tend to the trees (weed suppression and or mowing around them as they get established, and protection from deer and other animals), and ensure the public is free to harvest from the trees.
Anyone who would love to be a steward to the trees is invited to apply. We are giving priority to Black, Indigenous and People of Color led projects and communities. This year we are partnering with people who can plant a minimum of 20 trees, up to 100 trees. Small land holders are encouraged to collaborate with neighbors, schools, local churches and community-oriented businesses if they do not have room for the 20 minimum trees at one location. We will provide online education on how to plant and care for the trees. The trees we have available for fall 2021 are chestnut, pecan, shagbark and shellbark hickory, persimmons, hazelnuts, mulberry and elderberry.
We will mail bundles of bare root trees in early to late November. Late fall to early winter is the perfect planting time for bare-root trees. We provide the trees at no cost through a partnership with Robin Greenfield, Live Like Ally Foundation and Plant Path Nursery.
Stewards cover the cost of materials such as mulch and volunteer to do the planting.

Donate to help us plant 1,000 Community Fruit and Nut Trees in Fall 2021. You can also donate to our nonprofit here. If we raise $8,000 we can plant 1,000 trees. Live Like Ally Foundation is matching funds, so we only need to raise $4,000!
