SAVE THE AMAZON WITH DOM PHILLIPS: Finish his book

Donation protected
Dom Phillips was a talented and relentless journalist who was brutally murdered one year ago while reporting one of the most important stories of our lifetimes: the battle to save the Amazon rainforest from the brink of collapse and prevent a global ecological calamity. He spent years working on an ambitious, trailblazing book to cut through the noise, advance the most promising strategies, and tell the incredible stories of frontline heroes.

Dom’s ingenious life’s work is on hold because there isn’t enough funding to complete his inspiring vision and his murderers still have not been brought to justice a year after his tragic death deep in the Amazon jungle on June 5, 2022. This must change, but we’re running out of time!

His murderers did not want his reporting to be published — we cannot let them win. We have created this fundraiser as a last hope: Dom needs your help to bring his story to the world. Can you chip in £30 to help save the Amazon rainforest, honor Dom Phillips’ courageous legacy, and stand in solidarity with the brave Indigenous communities under attack? Please click the “Donate now” button and help before it is too late!

Dom’s family, his widow, a crack team of veteran journalists who loved Dom, and dedicated people like you have come together to ensure Dom’s book, “How To Save The Amazon,” will be published in a way that does justice to his sacrifice and keeps his mission alive. They will be guided by his partially completed manuscript and extensive notes and research.

We need to raise £22,000 (US$27,350) by June 30th to restart the book in time to meet strict publisher deadlines.

With your help, we will immediately begin sending reporters to seven remote locations across the sprawling Amazon basin, which is 28 times the size of the United Kingdom. Most of the places we need to go can only be accessed by boat, days-long hikes through the forest, or hitching a ride on a helicopter.

The first £16,000 will be spent on reporting trips. Additional funds will go towards fact-checking, revision, graphics, and images so we can make the best possible book.

Troublingly, global attention (and funding) has rapidly evaporated from Brazil after Jair Bolsonaro narrowly lost the presidential election last October. But while the political situation has changed somewhat in Brasília, the facts on the ground in the Amazon remain largely the same and the stakes are as real as ever. The destroyers of the Amazon remain extremely powerful and dangerous and must be held accountable for their crimes.

Dom was an ardent believer that real reporting on the most important issues cannot be done by telephone while sitting at an air conditioned desk thousands of miles away. He spent his savings and gave his life for this belief, fearlessly taking on the wealthy corporations and individuals that profit from the Amazon’s destruction.

The team must retrace his steps and follow his plan to finish the job as he would have wanted. These trips are expensive and require lots of time, experience, and complex logistics. It's not a cheap mission and that's why we need help to complete it.

Your support will turn the dream of “How To Save The Amazon” into a reality, permanently imprint Dom’s vision onto the global consciousness, and launch the unsung stories that Dom dared to tell at the center of the public debate before it is too late.

Please take two minutes to join this important project — any contribution makes a difference! Thank you!

UPDATE JUNE 5: We hit the £16,00 goal on Monday, June 5! Thank you so much to everyone for their generosity and solidarity! We decided to increase the goal to £22,000. The additional funds will be used towards fact-checking, revision, graphics, and images, which we had been trying to fund through other means.

UPDATE JUNE 19: We hit the £22,000 goal with the help of 500 amazing supporters! On behalf of Dom’s family and the entire team, thank you so much! We’ve revised the goal to £25,000. The additional resources will be put to use to improve the quality of the book with fact-checking, revision, graphics, and images or potentially an additional reporting trip. Thank you again for your support for this important project!
