Iron Man Distance Triathlon With No Training for Charity
Donation protected
Hello!
My name is Ricky Millns. I am a student at the University of Victoria, where I swim on the UVIC Vikes Swim Team, and a resident of Campbell River, where I am the Head Coach of the Campbell River Salmon Kings Swim Club.
A few days ago, I decided I wanted to push myself to my limits and accomplish something exceptional. I've always wondered if my elite athletic background and exceptional mental fortitude could be enough for me to complete an Iron Man Distance Triathlon with 0 preparation or training. So I've decided that 9 days from the writing of this (Saturday, June 8), I will do it.
I am extremely community-minded, so right off the start, I decided I wanted to try to use this ambitious goal as an opportunity to support a charity organization in the community. After consulting with the swimmers and coaches of the club that I coach, I landed on the Campbell River Head Injury Support Society, which is an organization that provides support, education, advocacy and fellowship to brain injury survivors, their caregivers and families, as well as provides information to the general public. I was appreciative of their work as they are doing what everyone in our beautiful community should be doing; making the world a better place.
So, on Saturday June 8, I will be racing an Iron Man Distance Triathlon beginning at Centennial Outdoor Pool in Campbell River with a 3.9km swim alongside some of my brave young swimmers of the Campbell River Salmon Kings, biking down the Coastal Island Highway to approximately Qualicum Bay/Bowser and back, and running a marathon around Campbell River to complete this race. I've never done anything like this. Though I do swim regularly in the school year, I haven't touched a bike or gone for a run in about 3 years at least.
Any and all proceeds from this event will be donated to the Campbell River Head Injury Support Society so that they can continue to do the work that they do. Any support is tremendously appreciated! We only have 9 days, and I have no idea what to expect from this, so follow along on the Campbell River Salmon Kings social media pages, find my personal page, or have a look at the Campbell River Head Injury Support Society social media pages for updates on fundraising, the route I'll be racing, and for updates on. my lack of training!
This race is dedicated to Terry Fox. My greatest Canadian of all time, who has always inspired me to do something exceptional like this.
Thanks again for your support. Any questions you have can be emailed to me!
