Composting For A Cause

Vision:

We want to help create a healthier world for future generations!

We are starting a non-profit called Composting for a Cause which partners with local agencies to provide families living in poverty with compostable diapers and a service that does the composting!

That means that we are helping vulnerable families while protecting the environment and we need your help to get started!

Our Ask:

On behalf of the families we will serve, and our planet, we are raising initial startup fees of $12,000. We plan to do a lot with these funds!

The $12,000 will help us gain fiscal sponsorship, create a website, hire a fundraising consultant, and most importantly, start a pilot program that will  provide families in Santa Cruz, San Mateo and San Francisco counties with compostable diapers and a compostable diaper service!

What does this mean for the planet?

Providing compostable diapers and a composting service means that we will greatly reduce waste, creating a healthier planet earth. This need is URGENT! The average disposable diaper takes approx. 500 years to decompose.  The Environmental Protection Agency reports that about 20 billion disposable diapers are dumped in landfills each year, accounting for more than 3.5 million tons of waste. Untreated waste is added to landfills and can contaminate our water, release methane into the air, and could potentially release bacteria and viruses from feces into water supplies. Yuck!  What’s more, the average baby uses 3,800 diapers in their lifetime. Composting services take the diapers and break them down in 12 weeks, turning the diapers into usable dirt! Amazing, right?

What does this mean for families?

This means that low-income families with small, vulnerable, children will struggle less to pay for diapers. On average, the monthly cost of diapers is $62.50. No family should have to worry about how they are going to provide diapers for their baby. Worrying about how to afford diapers on top of the ever increasing cost of rent and healthy food adds to the hardship faced by parents and their developing babies. We plan to reduce their stress by assisting with this essential part of caring for a baby. We also plan to empower parents who receive diapers by inviting some of them to join our team as members of our Board of Directors and as Community Educators to teach other families about composting diapers.

About the Co-Founders:

Lily Broberg Strong has worked as a Public Health home visiting nurse, serving this population for the last decade. She has seen first hand the need for diapers and the stress families experience by this unmet need.

Hayden Lilien is most importantly a mom in the Bay Area who knows just how outrageously expensive it is to raise a child here. She is also devastated by the amount of waste created by just one child in diapers. She is an Attorney with her M.B.A. and has operated non-profits that serve underprivileged populations for the past 10 years.

Combined we have the perfect experience to make this happen!

No donation is too small or large! We appreciate your support and look forward to reporting back on our successes!
