my name is Riki Rikard Larma. Yes, I am Photographer!

In April 2023 I compiled photos and other documentation of the Siege of Sarajevo to create a large-scale art piece. This piece shows the war through my eyes — and my camera.

My art was put on display at an exhibition in the rebuilt National Library, a place I photographed burning down many years ago. The goal of the Vijecnica Sarajevo exhibition: "Vjecita Vijecnica" was not only to show people My perspective of a city under siege but also to begin fundraising for equipment to process even more photo negatives from that time.

The photos featured in the exhibition were scanned with equipment from the early days of digital photography, and many need to be redone, as well as an unbelievable number that has never been scanned. I have hundreds of thousands of unscanned photo negatives documenting the war from 1992-1997. By scanning the negatives and archiving them in digital form, I will be able to properly preserve my work and legacy and continue to share them with the world. I hope to establish a Foundation for preserving Photographers' work from that period of Sarajevo.

As a reminder, the siege of Sarajevo was one of the longest sieges in the history of modern warfare and the longest siege of a capital city ever - it lasted 44 months. During the siege, the city was almost completely cut off from the rest of the country and the world, there was no food, electricity, gas, medicine or water... nearly 20,000 soldiers surrounded the city, and among them was an unknown number of snipers who stalked everything that moved. – cars, people, dogs... Doctors recorded five to fifteen people wounded by snipers every day. On average, 329 missiles of various types fell on the city daily, so it is estimated that around 50,000 tons of artillery shells alone were fired. According to the Research Documentation Center (IDC), 14,011 people were killed during the siege in Sarajevo. The United Nations then established AirLift to "supply the surrounding city", which ended up being an operation longer than the famous Airlift to Berlin, which was isolated in East Germany.
