Confirm Unmarked Graves In The 2nd St Cemetery

My name is Bridget and I’m a girl scout in Hummelstown trying to earn my silver award. If you live in Hummelstown, many of you have probably heard rumors about the empty plot in the back corner of the graveyard on Rosanna St. People say that those are likely the unmarked graves of people who died in prison or in the poorhouse, including children. With what limited documentation there is, it seems highly probable that this is true. However, historical societies have not come through for us. The information they do have is handwritten and illegible, and it’s unclear if any documentation was ever made as to who was buried. To prove that there are indeed people we need to use ground-penetrating radar. Ground-penetrating radar (sometimes abbreviated to GPR) uses radar pulses to create an image of what is underground. It is non-intrusive and is commonly used in small projects like home renovation to determine where pipes, cables, or even rock will be. Think of how bats use echolocation - by making a series of noises and using their advanced hearing to determine where the sound is bouncing back. GPR uses a similar concept with radio waves. However, it is pretty expensive. This is really the only way to confirm that there are people buried in the corner of the graveyard. Of course, we cannot identify each one of them individually, but confirming that they are there at all is a small way to make sure everyone is remembered, even if history wants us to forget.
