Computers for Sehithwa Primary

This is Katso. She is a 13-year-old student in Form 6 at Sehithwa Primary School, Botswana. Inspired by her passion for helping others, she dreams of studying medicine in college. A few weeks ago, Katso was honored as the overall top student in school, earning superior marks in all subjects—Agriculture, Creative and Performing Arts, Maths, Science, Religious and Moral Education, Setswana, and her favorite subject, English. She loves to write, especially poetry, and sometimes produces plays with her friends from school.
Katso is genuinely an extraordinary mind. And incredibly, her performance in school, her creative achievements, her English fluency, has all been achieved without once sitting down to a computer. She’s never sent an email, never Googled or YouTubed, never read an article on Wikipedia. She’s never printed a paper, saved a Word document, populated a spreadsheet, or added an unnecessary transition to a Power Point presentation.
Students like Katso are rare, and her age mates struggle to keep up. They're expected to learn mountain ranges and capitals they've never seen, microscopic organisms they've never examined, theater and sports they've never watched. Compared to our sons and daughters, these children are at a striking disadvantage.
It is Sehithwa’s hope to catch up to the developed world. Technology in education provides the opportunity to accommodate an individual student’s strengths and weaknesses, interests and motivations, personal preferences, and optimal learning pace.
Today, right now, you have an opportunity to help unlock a new door for these students.
As a volunteer, I have accepted the challenge of building a contemporary media center at Sehithwa Primary school. With 12 new computers, smartboard, photocopier, and wireless internet, students and teachers will be able to access new and valuable resources that will support their learning exponentially.
Already, the U.S. International Broadcasting Bureau office in Gaborone has generously agreed to donate three computers to the project, and the Botswana Ministry of Education will sponsor experts in technology and education to provide training to the teachers and administrators of Sehithwa Primary.
All that is left is you. But you must act now.
