Conner's Journey Through Osteosarcoma

Donation protected

On Monday, May 16th Conner complained of a sore lump on his thigh. For any other kid, on any other day, this would have been a bruised or pulled muscle, but for Conner, the x-ray showed something much different.

My name is Alan, and I am Conner's Uncle. I'm setting up this GoFundMe to help support Conner's medical bills and care during treatment. All money raised here goes directly to Conner's Mother, Cristina and Step-Father, Justin. Before you donate, let me share a little about his journey to date and what he'll face over the next 9-10 months.

On May 16th, Cristina was at a doctor's visit for Conner's younger brother, Corbin. While the nurse was in the room, Cristina took the opportunity to ask the nurse about a small bump on Conner's leg. The nurse and doctor took a look and ordered an immediate X-ray. Unfortunately, the x-ray showed a growth on Conner's right femur, and the doctor delivered the news that it didn't look good. Two days later, they were able to get Conner in for a consult at Nemours Children's Hospital in Orlando. The Oncologist confirmed it looked like cancer and set appointments for an MRI & biopsy. The MRI took place the following Wednesday, with the biopsy following the next day. The results gave Connor's tumor a name, Osteosarcoma, and confirmed it was growing and aggressive. In the span of two weeks, Conner, Cristina and Justin went from planning their summer break to preparing to fight a battle with cancer.

In the next few days, Conner will go back to the hospital to get a port put in and on Friday, June 3, he'll start chemotherapy. Chemo will last for ten weeks, then the doctors will operate to remove the portion of the bone the tumor is growing on. The extent of the operation has yet to be determined. After the procedure, Conner will have to endure another 5-7 months of chemo along with rehabilitation of his leg. Conner's treatment will last a minimum of 8-10 months.

No child should have to go through this, and no parent should have to watch their child fight cancer. While we can't take away the pain of this journey, we can help support Conner by ensuring his parents have everything they need to get him the best care and support possible while at home and in the hospital. Conner has health insurance through Justin's job, but as we all know, there will still be deductibles and co-pays along with medications, supplies and procedures the insurance doesn't cover. In addition, the hospital where Conner will be receiving treatment is an hour and a half away from their home. The cost of treatment is going to add up quickly. For Conner to win this fight, we need to make sure Cristina & Justin have the means to get Conner the treatment and care he needs regardless of what insurance covers.

I'll drop in here periodically to post updates about Conner's journey, but if you would like more frequent updates, his Mother, Cristina, has started a Facebook page titled "Connors Journey Through Osteosarcoma." Thank you to those of you who are able to contribute financially to Conner's care. For those who feel compelled to help in other ways, please visit Cristina's Facebook page.
