The Aurora Theater Shooter took Adan Avila’s leg. However, that’s all he took. He didn’t take his spirit, his motivation or his pride. Adan didn’t stop to wallow in self pity. Hell, he didn’t even slow down.

HOW I’M INVOLVED

Did you ever meet a regular Joe, then find out later they’re a battle-scared warrior…a VALIANT CONQUEROR of life’s trials? Mr. Adan Avila teaches Spanish and Technical Skills at Elkhart Elementary here in Aurora, Colorado. Adan has a calm restraint about him, but comes alive in his classroom. He springs around his class like a puma leaping from tree to tree. I rarely see him sitting at his desk. When he told me about making the Olympic Weight Lifting Team I was shocked. I’m just as guilty as anyone else who believes teachers don’t have lives and spend their weekends and summers in recovery. How cool it was to actually know an Olympic athlete! When he approached me and asked if I could help him raise funds, I was all in.

THE SHOCKING TRUTH

After I signed on to promote Adan, I asked for a few photos and some background information. Until I saw a photo of him in his Olympic Singlet, I had no idea he lost his leg. It’s not like we teach in shorts. Our attire at school is business casual. Most importantly, he never mentioned the shooting or his leg. He does not spend one single iota of a second on past hurt. Nothing about him even whispers victim.

It’s not that he’s been keeping his personal tragedy a secret, his strength and spirit were already past it. It is a part of him but he doesn’t let it define who he is. It will never be a part of his legacy. Giving back to his community through education, the Olympic Weight Lifting Team, his family…THAT IS HIS LEGACY.

THE PITCH

Getting a spot on the Olympic Team is the first step. Shockingly, the Olympics does not pay for travel or accommodations to or from any of the competitions. There is a competition July 8th, 2022 in St. Louis. Adan has scrimped and pinched pennies to make that meet. The ultimate challenge is the big competition in Dubai in March of 2023.

Dubai is the literal playground of the rich. Although the Olympics has not yet released detailed information on that competition, estimations of that trip are in the thousands of dollars. Going the absolute cheapest…I’m talking a 36 hour flight while holding a live chickenand your knees in your chest economy class and staying at the Holiday Inn by the airport…is about $4,727. Flying business class (both feet and the floor, sans chicken) to Dubai coupled with a moderate hotel will run about $8,793.
