Continue Dr. Udagawa's Legacy: Donate for Education

Dr. Takeshi Udagawa, a distinguished nuclear physicist and professor, passed away on March 24, 2025, at the age of 92. Born in Tokyo, he held positions at leading institutions, including the University of Texas at Austin, and made major contributions to nuclear reaction theory. His work strengthened academic ties between the U.S. and Japan, earning him the Order of the Sacred Treasure in 2009.

After retirement, Takeshi remained devoted to education, serving as the volunteer principal of the Austin Japanese School, where he worked closely with faculty and students. This role brought him great joy and fulfillment, reflecting his lifelong passion for learning and mentorship.

A memorial gathering will be held at Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home in North Austin on Saturday, April 19, to celebrate Takeshi’s remarkable life and legacy. His obituary states that, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity or institution of your choice in his memory.

With his wife Mami’s support, we would like to establish the “Udagawa Fund” to benefit education and students at Austin Japanese School. Through this fund, we hope to continue sharing Udagawa-sensei's passion for learning and mentorship.

元テキサス大学教授であり、優れた業績を残された物理学者の宇田川猛先生が、2025年3月24日、享年92歳で永眠されました。宇田川先生は東京に生まれ、テキサス大学をはじめとする一流の教育機関で教鞭をとり、核反応理論の発展に大きく貢献されました。日米間の学術交流の発展に寄与された功績により、2009年には日本国天皇より「瑞宝中綬章」が授与されました。

退職後も教育への情熱を持ち続けられ、オースチン日本語補習授業校の校長として、教職員と共に教育活動に尽力されました。補習校での活動は、宇田川先生の生涯にわたる学びと指導への情熱の表れであり、退職後の人生において有意義な時間を過ごされたと伺っています。

宇田川先生を偲ぶ会は、4月19日（土）オースチンのWeed-Corley-Fish葬儀場にて執り行われます。訃報にも記載のとおり、ご家族からは「供花の代わりに、博士を偲び、ご自身の選ばれた慈善団体または教育機関へご寄付を」とのお願いがございます。

ご遺族のご賛同を得て、この度オースチン日本語補習授業校の教育と生徒たちを支援するため、「宇田川基金（Udagawa Fund）」を設立したいと考えております。この基金を通じて、宇田川先生の学びと指導への情熱を、次の世代に引き継いでいければと願っています。

この基金を用い、子どもたちの心を動かす講演者の招待や、理科から文学に至るまで幅広い分野の書籍の購入など、様々な活動を行っていく所存です。
