Continuing Ilmo's Legacy
Donation protected
Witty, kind, clever, and practical, wielder of an understated defiance of convention, Ilmo van der Löwe was a one-of-kind friend, co-worker, and most of all, father and husband. Accomplished and unassuming, Ilmo could delight with his creativity without calling attention to it. Who says you can’t mount your kitchen tools on a pegboard wall, stake out a private office in an unused building, or ward off bipedal tomato thieves with a home-made “UC Berkeley Soil Toxicity Experiment” sign? Time with Ilmo was an enjoyable romp through ideas, observations, and his genuine interest in whomever was privileged to share space with him.
The world is now a shade less puckish without Ilmo in it. Despite heroic medical efforts, he did not survive a sudden and unexpected brain aneurysm. Ilmo is survived by his wife, Hayzell, their son, Cal (age 12), and by extended family and friends spanning UC Berkeley, Oxford, Cambridge, Google, Waymo, and Facebook, the US, UK, Finland, and many places beyond. As a manager, colleague, or friend, Ilmo was exceedingly generous with his ideas, talent, and time. In passing, as an organ donor, his continued generosity will give many others a new chance of life, directly and, ever the scientist, through the research his gift will enable others to conduct.
In lieu of flowers, please support the continuation of Ilmo’s legacy by supporting care for his wife and twice exceptional son, who lost his loving father far, far too soon.

This GoFundMe is organized by Ilmo’s friends* to help Hayzell and Cal cover the sudden and mounting medical and funeral costs, along with continued support for Hayzell’s care and support, and Cal’s future education.
