Hello There!
My name is Brittany Van Pelt, and I am fundraising for my participation as a member of the fourth cohort of the Women's Campaign School at the Lyndon B. Johnson School of Public Affairs at the University of Texas.
The LBJ Women's Campaign School is a nonpartisan, issue-neutral program that trains women who want to run for elected office or become campaign managers, regardless of political party affiliation. The program brings together top political experts from across the nation to lead an immersive training program on media relations, public speaking, fundraising, grassroots organizing, and more. The program kicks off in Austin on May 11-13, with monthly virtual sessions throughout November 2023.
Today, women comprise of over 50% of our population but about one-third of elected officials nationwide. I am one of 65 women selected from many applicants across the country to be a part of this next cohort. My representation within this cohort could help provide visibility to women who sit at the intersections of multiple marginalized identities who aren't always represented in our political system.
I became immersed in politics after the 2018 midterm elections when my Historically Black University was badly gerrymandered by being cracked into two districts right down the center of campus.
I am tired of out-of-touch politicians in Washington and in our state capitols across who are more interested in upholding partisan party politics than accomplishing meaningful legislative change for those they represent. I have dreams of running for office to help reshape and refocus our country toward a future that prioritizes families, workers, and a better way of life for all Americans, but I can't do it alone.
