Help Silvia, Veteran Survive Cancer

People always seem to come back into my life when I least expect it, and I always think to myself it happens for a reason.  When I left my job in the insurance industry 5 years ago I left knowing I gained some lifelong friends, but one stood out above them all.   My Friend Silvia Bravo and I have been through so much together she remained in my heart and in my thoughts long after I left.  We kept in touch for a while then she went off the radar, and something told me to look for her.  Once I found her I thought this time I won’t lose contact.  Sharing memories here and there was like we were back in the office, and everything we had been through since then hadn’t happened…. Now I think of her and I can’t shake the feeling I got when she told me she had Cancer…. I thought to myself not my friend…Why her?  She has so much to live for …her son, her mom, her siblings, her boyfriend, and her career.

I went to see her today after so many years, and all I could do was hope maybe I heard wrong, or they made a mistake and she was ok after all.  Then it finally sunk in seeing her in front of me as she told me everything all I could think of was to ask GOD to give her the strength as even the strongest feel weakness when life challenges them unexpectedly.

As we sat and talked she told me she never thought she would be faced with such a life changing challenge at 35 years old.  She told me she was diagnosed with Triple Negative Breast Cancer on July 2, and as she told me everything she’s been through since that day I could only wish I could’ve been there with her. She said that day she sat with the surgeon hearing everything she was telling her, explaining the diagnosis, telling her about decisions she would have to make, the pros the cons, the good, the bad and the ugly, but all she kept hearing was the word CANCER. She said it was like she was telling her she was going to die tomorrow. That nothing made sense, and all she could do was question why her? What did she do to deserve this? Who could’ve wished this on her? Why did she keep facing these challenges that took so much out of her?  She went on to tell me everything she’s been through this past year… from a highly anticipated pregnancy that resulted in a sudden miscarriage, to the sudden death of her father from a heart attack, to now being diagnosed with Cancer. I felt my heart sink each time she mentioned the things she had been through.  I commended her for being a strong person and assured her she could get through this as she’s gotten through everything else.

If faith, will, determination and heart could pay for her treatments you wouldn't be reading this post. Silvia went on to tell me she paid about $100-$200 for two recent doctor’s visits, and her expenses will only continue to increase from this point forward. She is already scrambling to get assistance to help with her son as she wishes to keep his life as normal as possible, she’s scrambling to file for disability, FMLA, and applying for all assistance offered to Veterans as well as anything else she can get her hands on to lessen the blow. Not only does someone with Cancer have to fight to live but at the same time they must fight to keep up with all the expenses that come with it.

As a mother of 9-year-old who is full of hopes and dreams to one day serve his country (like his mom), become a professional baseball player and be a firefighter she told me she has a promise to keep to him "Mom WILL be there to help you achieve one if not all of those dreams".

Thank you in advance for any assistance you can provide for my friend. Weather it's a monetary donation, encouraging words, sharing your own story or guidance with available resources for her to access it is all welcomed.  Sadly, sometimes money is what separates those who have a chance and those who don't. Triple Negative Breast Cancer does not have the option to be treated with medication, so imagine her surprise when she was told her Chemotherapy starts July 17, 2018 at full force because "She’s still young".
