Cookies With A Cause

My name is Chelsea Tallman and I have been making cookies for over a decade, as a hobby, for fundraisers, or as gifts. It is fun knowing that people look forward to my treats, they ask for them, make people smile, and bring people joy. I have always used food as a way to express that I care. I love to fill people's bellies and spirits, food has a special way of making that happen.
A few years ago I took that idea and started a community outreach to do just that, fill people's bellies and spirits, aimed at those in need of both of those things. I started to make brown bag lunches and special meals to provide to those in need and living on the streets in my home town of Spokane, Washington. My meals were wholesome, well-rounded, nutritious, made from scratch, and a little different than what people would expect. I wanted my food to make the people who were gifted it feel special, cared for, and visible. So, once a week I made meals and either took to the streets to hand out the bags or headed to a women's shelter with trays full of food to donate. Often those bags or trays would even contain my famous shortbread cookies, icing and all. (To learn more see Sandwich Saturday A Free Lunch )
You might be wondering how these two things tie together and what I mean by Cookies With A Cause. I have long struggled to find a way to continue supporting my outreach without having to continually look for donors or without registering it as a non-profit, which would place so many restrictions on it that I would lose the parts of it I loved, the parts that filled my spirit. I have also longed to find an outlet that would allow me to share my cookies with a larger audience. The pieces started to come together, start a cottage kitchen to make and sell my edible artwork. A way to broaden my audience, allow me a creative outlet, sell bite sized pieces of joy, and the profits could fund my outreach program each week. Best of both worlds.
In October I started the process of setting up my little cookie company, Butter & Sugar Made Better . I knew it would be a lot of work and I knew I would need some capital, not a lot, but enough that I knew I needed help. Since I have been doing this for years I have a lot of the basics, but there is so much more to it than basics. The licensing and registration alone is close to $1000. Not to mention, the advanced tools and supplies needed to take cookies to another level and to be able to offer custom cookies. I started doing my research; packaging, labeling, marketing, ingredients, education, registration, licensing, storage, it added up fast.
This is where you come in. I am praying that you are reading this because you were drawn to my little cause. Whether it is because you believe in me and my cookies, you want to support my outreach, or a little of both. I am raising money to obtain the startup capital to launch Butter & Sugar Made Better.
