Cool Water Bikes Program Survival
Tax deductible
Cool Water Bikes needs your help to stay open and continue building relationships with youth who are homeless in this unique non-profit retail business environment. If we do not receive a significant increase in funding this summer, we will have to consider closing the shop.
Cool Water Bikes is a full-service non-profit bicycle shop in Spokane, WA. It is part of Cup of Cool Water, a Christian ministry working alongside youth who are homeless since 1995. Cool Water Bikes was created to invite youth into a professional business environment where they can learn skills and better their life through bicycles. Youth can earn a bicycle by spending 10 hours working alongside a mentor repairing bicycles, organizing and cleaning the shop, and helping retail customers.
Cool Water Bikes refurbishes used, donated bicycles to resell to the public and make available for the youth to earn. We also sell new and used parts and accessories and provide a full range of service options.
Cool Water Bikes started in 2008 out of a shared interest in bikes between youth and staff at Cup of Cool Water. It began in a 10'x10' room in our drop-in center and quickly grew to overflow two other rooms. It was obvious that if we wanted the program to become what we wanted, we would have to move it into a real storefront space. That finally happened in 2013 and CWB has been open full time since then.
CWB currently has one paid staff member and several volunteers. In the near future, we are hoping to add a second paid staff (either part-time or full-time) to serve youth and customers more effectively. In 2015, sales revenue at Cool Water Bikes only covered 58% of the expenses to run the shop (2016 is looking about the same). We are dependent on financial donations to cover the rest.
We need $10,000 to make up the current deficit in funding for the year. If we can reach the $20,000 mark, we will hire a second staff member part time in the shop. Can you please consider donating to help us continue this work of building relationships and teaching skills to youth who are homeless in Spokane? Thank you!
