Cork Church Memorial Fund
Cork was settled in the 1840's, largely by immigrants fleeing famine from their homeland of Ireland. Shortly after the settlers cleared their lands attention turned to the construction of a community church. The first church was completed in 1861. Over the years since, three other churches have been constructed on the site, but regrettably the last church was destroyed in the summer of 2021. The determination to have a structure on the site lives on in the people of Cork and the surrounding areas.
This fund raising campaign has the objective to construct a shelter building as a memorial to the churches which have stood there. Our vision is an open shelter for those who come to visit the final resting place of the more than 350 persons who are buried in the surrounding cemetery. It will house a few artifacts and pews from the churches which have stood on the site and be a place where visitors can have shade, shelter from the rain and a place to rest when visiting the cemetery. Plans are to display within the shelter a list of all who are buried in the cemetery as well as a history of the churches and the historic community.
We are planning on frolics to supply the construction labour from volunteers but we need to raise funds to buy the building material, supplies and restoration of artifacts. The size of structure will depend on funds raised, we estimate our cost to be between 10 to 15 thousand dollars. Any contribution will be greatly appreciated.
