Cortney Boring's Medical Fund

20 year old Cortney was on vacation with us in July 2016.  She is our son's girlfriend.  Although our son was unable to get time off work to vacation with us, Cortney is like a daughter to us and she went with us anyway.

2 days into our vacation we went in to get Cortney up to go down to the beach with us.  As she got out of bed and starting shuffling through her suitcase for something to wear, we stood and talked with my neice and her friend.  As Cortney started walking toward us, my husband noticed her right arm was hanging limp by her side and she drug her right foot over the end of the pull-out couch.  As soon as she faced us, I saw the crooked smile on her face and realized something was terribly wrong.  My husband, who is also a First Responder, immediately tried to talk to her and helped her to sit down.  I called 911, and within minutes the North Myrtle Beach Rescue Squad was there taking her vitals.  At first we thought it was a seizure, since Cortney is an epileptic.

We followed the ambulance to the McCleod Seacoast Medical Center where they immediately did a CT scan and determined that Cortney had suffered a stroke.  Her parents were already preparing for the 10 hour trip to Myrtle Beach when the doctors decided she needed to be life-flighted to MUSC in Charleston, SC.  In the meantime, my husband and I couldn't imagine that this, now 12 hour, trip by car would seem like forever to a family whose daughter's life was in danger.  We called around to some local airports in West Virginia and found a charter flight out of Beckley, WV and rerouted Cortney's parents and sister there.

By the time we drove from Myrtle Beach to Charleston, Cortney's parents were only 10 minutes behind us arriving at MUSC.  Cortney was already in and out of the life-saving surgery that removed the blood clot from the base of her brain.  Within a few hours of surgery, she was already making eye contact and squeezing our hands.

This was just 3 weeks ago and Cortney has made amazing leaps and bounds in her recovery.  She was at MUSC for 6 days, 2 of those days in ICU.  She was hospitalized again at WVU Hospitals near home for 3 days this past week for swelling in her brain, which is normal after a stroke.  No additional damage was caused from the swelling!  They have found a small hole in her heart where they believe the blood clot could have come from.  More tests will need to be done and they have an appointment with a cardiologist.

Cortney has regained mobility and physical strength, but will have several months of speech therapy.  She has what they termed "receptive aphasia".  She understands most of what you say to her, but not everything.  She has a difficult time communicating what she wants to say.  For at least two weeks she will have speech and occupational therapy 5 days a week.  After that they will taper off to 2-3 days a week until her speech returns completely.  She is expected to reach full or near full recovery.

In the meantime, Cortney cannot be left alone.  Her sister will be going back to school next week and her parents are trying to rearrange their work schedules so that someone is home with her at all times.  My son goes back to college next week as well.  My husband and I will help with Cortney whenever we can.  To look at her, you wouldn't know anything has happened.  Most of the disability is in her speech, and because she can't communicate effectively if something happens with her, she needs constant supervision for the time being.

I am asking for not only monetary help for Cortney's medical bills, which 100% received will go towards that, but your thoughts and prayers for her and her family.  They are such a wonderful family and are extremely grateful for the love that they have been given throughout this ordeal.  They are strong and supportive of one another.  God has been with them and will continue to see Cortney through this healing process.  She finished her freshman year in college in May, and hopefully will be able to return next year.   We all thank you from the bottom of our hearts for any way that you can help out the Boring family.
