We are in a time of exponential social reform. In this window of immense opportunity, it’s vital for the historically marginalised to proactively change the narrative to create a better future. We have heard it said that ‘silence is the politics of consent’. Silence is not unity. It is time for critical reflection, breaking down stereotypes, decoding racial language and embracing our unique cultural differences to bring about lasting change.

The recurring adversities that many black women encounter in their working lives lead to many issues that interrupt and sometimes stop us from reaching our full potential. These experiences can also lead to feelings of low self-worth, over self-criticism and major self-doubt, all of which can have a detrimental impact on our mental health and employment status.

In response, I have created the Counter-Col Network (CCN) which aims to create the space for black women to be RESTORED,  be EMPOWERED & to ACHIEVE. Made up of professional women of African and African Caribbean diaspora descent, the team behind the network is collaborating to harness the power of our collective voice to bring about the change we need. Our sole purpose is to equip, support and empower black women to excel in the workplace and be strategically confident in dealing with issues of race, equality and diversity.  We come together with similar stories: we are black, ambitious, hardworking, with the integrity and passion for succeeding, yet we continue to be exposed to unfair judgment, microaggressions, stereotyping and rare second chances. As a team, we are leveraging our learned experiences to work with black women to take control of their working life experiences and career success.

Counter-Col Network has a specific and practical goal with a clear vision into the long-term benefits for black women for generations to come. The network will provide a comprehensive resource hub, a national support service and are partnering with several organisations to create access to services such as coaching, mentoring, counselling and psychotherapy, training and legal services for black women. We are raising funds in order to implement the operational and technological infrastructure required not just to deliver our charitable purposes but to provide a quality service that we can take pride in. From the outset the CCN support service, the biggest sub-set of our operations, will be provided free of charge. It will be manned by trained volunteers who will be supported by paid part-time administrators and qualified mental health practitioners. The CCN Support team will listen to and support women as they explore and identify all options in the decision-making process pertaining to their response to a workplace issue. These women may be signposted to our listed partners when deemed necessary. No such service exists in the UK today, but the often curtailed or even derailed career trajectories of many black women suggests that there is a demand worthy of our cause.

We want to ask the community to be part of the revolution and help us get our operations off the ground. Please support our initiative by making a contribution, big or small. We will always be transparent with the use of our funds and provide regular updates to our supporters.

Together, we can rewrite the narratives to successfully give black women a fighting chance to navigate their journeys from apprenticeship to retirement.
