Courage for Carter

Donation protected
They say it takes a village to raise a child. So what does it take to raise a sick child? What if that disease was slowly taking that child’s life, and there was no cure? What does it take to raise that child?

Stacie and George Brischler have 2 beautiful sons, Peyton & Carter. Carter is 5 years old and has been diagnosed in the beginning of December, with a rare genetic disorder called adreno-leukodystrophy. It is a disorder characterized by normal development in early childhood, followed by rapid degeneration as the disease ravages the brain. Carter’s symptoms will grow worse, including blindness, deafness, seizures, and loss of muscle control. This relentless downward spiral leads to a vegetative state followed by death, usually 2 to 5 years from diagnosis. It is already begun to affect his vision and hearing. All of this has happened in only a few weeks. Peyton, who is 8, is watching everything his little brother is going through, not yet old enough to understand the pain and suffering his family is all feeling, while his parents await test results to see if he is also positive for this rare gene.

Stacie & George’s job is now solely to help Carter fight for his life. To hold his hand when he is frightened, to read to him to remind him of a fantasy world, and to always remind him that he is loved beyond words. At this time, there is no known cure, no treatment, and no way of knowing what challenge tomorrow may bring. They will spend countless nights telling their beautiful little boy it will be ok, without knowing if it really will. Stacie & George have always tried to raise their children with strength, determination and kindness, and will now continue, with never taking anything for granted, and to always enjoy the small things that life can still bring.

In the coming months, Carter’s family will need a tremendous amount of support. There are day-to-day needs, medical bills, medical equipment to purchase, household needs, loss of work and memories to create. There is no way to know the length of time this little boy will be with his family, and what expenses will accumulate.

Our goal is to provide them with resources to help keep Carter as comfortable as possible and help the family enjoy and treasure their remaining time together. The family would like to create as many memories as possible that they will hold in their hearts forever. Your donation will bless them along the way and allow them to focus on the time they have left together.
