On Sunday, August 4, 2019, our niece Courtney Spencer was on her way back from Cedar Point when a wrong way driver slammed head-on into the car she was traveling in on I-90 east in Cleveland, OH.
Courtney and another friend in the backseat were critically injured and her two friends in the front seat did not survive. It is truly a miracle that she is alive, given the extent of her injuries when she was transported to MetroHealth hospital for treatment. To date she has undergone five extensive surgeries, and has another surgery scheduled for August 15, 2019.
Her injuries are many, as her seatbelt sliced her from hip to hip, which left organs torn, ripped, and lacerated as well as exposed. In addition, both her legs as well as her right arm were broken. She also had to have a plate attached at the base of her skull and vertebrae to provide stability to her neck. She has her age and health going for her, but her recovery will be long and extensive. Courtney is hoping to resume her studies at University of Cincinnati, and we pray that eventually she will be able to do so.
Many of her friends and family have reached out asking if there’s a way to contribute to Courtney’s care, so we decided to start this GoFundMe account for her. Any amount you can give, great or small, is appreciated. And if you are unable to donate, thoughts and prayers are just as important!
We are thankful to everyone who has shown support and been there for her and her family during this horrific tragedy. The outpouring of love and encouragement has been overwhelming and gratifying!
