Fundraiser for the rehabilitation of Marcin, who suffered a massive right-sided stroke.

Dear friends,

We would like to help our friend who has suffered a stroke while in Poland on vacation. Marcin does not have private medical insurance and each consultation, medication or physiotherapy must be covered from private funds.

Marcin is not allowed to fly for at least 3 months due to the pressure difference during the flight, which may endanger his life.

We would like to raise the funds that would cover the costs of rehabilitation and medical treatment in Poland, so that Marcin could return to Ireland and continue his treatment here.

On the 31st December 2022 after 10 p.m. something happened that has turned his world upside down.

But let’s start from the beginning...

Marcin has been living and working in Sligo for 17 years. Last November, he had an accident at work as a result of which he suffered a whiplash injury. From that day on, he struggled with his health.

He went to Poland to visit his family for Christmas and an even bigger tragedy happened. He had a stroke on New Year's Eve. Since January 1, 2023, the entire right side of the body is paralyzed. First 10 days he spent in the Clinical Hospital in Gdansk where he was fighting for his recovery, all his medical checks had showed that he suffered three strokes in different areas of the brain. Immediately after discharge from the hospital, we found out that the European Health Insurance Card covers only the cost of his stay in the hospital. Marcin needs to undergo at least three months of intensive rehabilitation so that he can start functioning again: learn to walk, write and move correctly. Unfortunately, this can only be done through private medical care. The insurance he has in Ireland does not cover such treatment in Poland. And what’s even worse, Marcin cannot travel by plane for the next 3 months, so he has no other choice than to continue his therapy in Poland through private medical care.

The cost of his treatment is about PLN 3,500 per week (approx. EUR 740), including the stay in the hospital / clinic.

After 3 weeks, due to rising costs, Marcin was brought home in Poland. But we haven't given up on rehabilitation. We bring him to physiotherapy every day, also massage therapist come to the house to help him get back on his feet quickly. Now the costs have decreased to about PLN 1700 per week (approx. EUR 360).

Each specialist consultation is an additional one-off cost of about PLN 300 (approx. EUR 64) but Marcin must be under constant medical supervision.

We would like to raise the funds to cover the costs of his treatment in Poland until Marcin will be able to return to Ireland by plane without any risk and damage to his health and continue his treatment here where his family and friends are.
